In a tragic turn of events following a Bible study in Ohio, a man was killed and a pastor critically injured in what officials are calling a “freak accident” involving a fallen tree and power lines. The heartbreaking incident took place in Toledo as Pastor Andrew Edwards of Northwest Baptist Church was driving fellow church member Richard Miller home after their midweek Bible gathering.

According to the church’s Facebook post, the two men were stopped at a red light when a large tree suddenly fell on top of their vehicle, dragging live power lines with it. Toledo Fire and Rescue officials described the event as highly unusual and unforeseeable, adding that two nearby vehicles were also damaged, but their occupants escaped unharmed.

Tragically, 35-year-old Richard Miller died at the scene. Pastor Edwards was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Miraculously, he has since stabilized and begun the road to recovery, though his injuries were extensive.

“As hard as this is to believe and share, Bro. Richard was taken home to be with the Lord,” the church wrote in a statement. “Pastor Edwards is in critical care—but he is stable and responsive and has movement in all extremities.”

Doctors have identified several injuries, including fractures to his clavicle, sternum, and a vertebra in his back. Of greatest concern was a small brain bleed, which physicians have been monitoring closely. However, an Easter Sunday update brought a wave of relief to the church family: Pastor Edwards had been moved from the ICU to the trauma unit after neurologists determined the brain injury posed no immediate danger.

“Pastor Edwards awoke suddenly and expressed his desire to return to his pastoral duties, stating that he has much work to do,” the church shared. “He was reassured that all responsibilities are being managed in his absence. We give thanks to the Lord for His continued healing and faithfulness.”

In the aftermath of the accident, the church community has rallied in prayer and support. Edwards’ family expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love: “Your kindness and care mean so much to our family.”

Though they are grieving the loss of Richard Miller, Northwest Baptist Church has taken comfort in the hope of eternal life and the promise of God’s presence amid suffering. “We do not grieve as those without hope,” one church member wrote. “We know Richard is with the Lord, and we trust He is not finished with Pastor Edwards yet.”

As the community mourns and prays, they cling to verses like Romans 8:28, which says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
