The verbal clash between President Donald Trump and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has intensified, with the two trading sharp insults and threats over the weekend—an exchange that has now become an almost daily occurrence.
The congresswoman has been a long-time supporter of Trump and has compared him to Christ several times. But she has been increasingly critical of Trump since the government shutdown began on Oct. 1, including his initial reluctance regarding efforts to release the Epstein Files. She has criticized his focus on foreign policy at the expense of domestic issues such as healthcare.
Greene uses her Christian faith to frame her actions and allegiances. She has said she wants the feud with Trump to end because of Christ’s teachings about forgiveness. And when Trump accused her of “losing her way,” she said, “The only way is through Jesus. That’s my way, and I’ve definitely not lost it….”
Trump announced on Friday that he was withdrawing his support for her re-election bid in 2026. He also called her a traitor and a disgrace.
“I understand that wonderful, Conservative people are thinking about primarying Marjorie in her District of Georgia, that they too are fed up with her and her antics, and if the right person runs, they will have my complete and Unyielding Support,” he wrote on social media.
He labeled her “Lightweight Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Brown,” and said he used “Brown” rather than “Greene” because “Green grass turns Brown when it begins to ROT!”
Trump has accused Greene of betraying “the entire Republican Party when she turned Left, performed poorly on the pathetic ‘View’ (television show), and became the RINO that we all know she always was.” (RINO stands for “Republican in Name Only.”) He also called her “another fake politician….”
On Sunday, Greene accused Trump of putting “blood in the water and (creating) a feeding frenzy” when he called her a traitor. “…it could ultimately lead to a harmful or even deadly outcome,” NBC News quoted her as saying.
Greene called last weekend’s attacks “unwarranted and vicious” and said Trump’s rhetoric could incite “dangerous radicals” to make serious attacks against her and her family. Trump dismissed possible dangers, saying, “Frankly, I don’t think anyone cares about her.”
Meanwhile, police in Rome, Ga., where Greene and her family live, announced on Monday that someone had sent two threatening emails that targeted Greene’s son. The emails came from the same address, according to a police spokesperson.
One email said, “I already have the plane ticket booked…. MTG’s son [redacted] will have his life snuffed out soon… better watch his back.” Police forwarded the threats to the Secret Service, which said it does not protect Greene’s son. The U.S. Capitol Police also stated that the emails indicated it could not discuss possible investigations due to safety considerations.
Greene has publicly blamed Trump for recent death threats against her and said he “was trying to make an example of her to prevent the release of files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019, per CNN.
“I never thought that fighting to release the Epstein files, defending women who were victims of rape, and fighting to expose the web of rich, powerful elites would have caused this, but here we are,” according to The HuffPost.
Dana Bash, host of CNN’s State of the Union, asked Greene about the feud in a Sunday interview. Bash said the threats against Greene were unacceptable, but she reminded the congresswoman that Trump has similarly attacked other people. Bash added, “I haven’t heard you speak out about it until it was directed at you.”
Greene’s response surprised some people. “I think that’s fair criticism. And I would like to say, humbly, that I’m sorry for participating in the toxic politics…. It’s very bad for our country, and it’s been something I’ve thought about a lot, especially since Charlie Kirk was assassinated…. As Americans, no matter what side of the aisle we’re on, we have far more in common than we have differences.”
The HuffPost noted that some members of the public were skeptical of Greene’s apology. “Considering Greene’s stark shift from MAGA-hat-wearing loyalist to Trump critic, some X users didn’t find her apology on CNN sincere,” it said.
The congresswoman condemned what she called the “toxic political industrial complex… (that) thrives on ripping us all apart but never delivers anything good for the American people, who I love.”
