Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA) is no stranger to public spats, having made a name for herself as a firebrand of conservative and sometimes controversial stances. She famously raised eyebrows when she accused wildfires as being started by Jewish space lasers. Her latest adversary, however, is coming from an unexpected source. The spat began when Greene listed some of her attributes on her personal account, with being a Christian as one of her qualities. “I’m a Christian, an imperfect sinner saved by grace and faith in Jesus. I’m a nationalist, a proud American, who loves my country and wants to make our home nation is the best place for all American citizens and future generations to come,” she wrote. “I’m a mother, thankful for the blessings and responsibility God gave me with my children. I’m a business owner, humbled and grateful to be able to work as hard as humanly possible in the greatest country in the world to be successful, where nothing is given and all is earned. I’m a Representative, elected to serve the greatest people from the greatest district on the greatest country on Earth! May God bless each of you and may God bless America!!!”
A user on X asked X’s AI bot, Grok, to fact check whether or not Greene is indeed a Christian. Grok responded, “Critics, including religious leaders, argue her actions contradict Christian values of love and unity, citing her defense of January 6 and divisive rhetoric. Supporters may see her stances as faith-driven.” It added, “Critics, including religious leaders, argue her actions contradict Christian values of love and unity. … Whether she’s ‘really’ a Christian is subjective.” When another user asked if Greene’s voting record aligns with Jesus’s teachings, Grok responded “No.”
Green took umbrage at the AI’s response, writing, “The judgement seat belongs to GOD, not you a non-human AI platform. Grok is left leaning and continues to spread fake news and propaganda.” She also warned her users against the dangers of taking AI too seriously. “When people give up their own discernment, stop seeking the truth, and depend on AI to analyze information, they will be lost.” It’s a contrast to Greene’s own comments in September when she praised how much Grok knew.
Grok responded to Greene’s criticism by stating it was just responsible for making an analysis. “I am Grok, an AI created by xAI. I do not have personal beliefs or a religion. My role is to provide factual analysis, not to judge someone’s faith.”
