A small Kansas town is reeling after the shocking death of a beloved Catholic priest, who was fatally shot at his church’s rectory last Thursday afternoon. Father Arul Carasala, 57, known for his compassionate heart and pastoral wisdom, died after being transported to a nearby hospital, leaving the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca — and the surrounding community — in deep mourning.

According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Gary Hermesch, 66, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder following the attack. Authorities responded to a 911 call around 3 p.m. local time, reporting shots fired at the rectory. Deputies found Father Carasala suffering from gunshot wounds outside the residence. Despite emergency efforts, he later died at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital.

“We’re all just still in a state of shock,” said Father Brian Schieber, Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, in an interview with Fox News Digital. “This is small-town America. And Father Arul was such a beloved pastor here in Seneca, Kansas. He’s been a pastor there for over 13 years.”

Father Schieber described Carasala as a true “good shepherd” who knew each of his parishioners by name. Over the years, Father Arul baptized countless children, celebrated weddings, comforted grieving families at funerals, and brought solace to the sick. “He was present to people in their greatest moments of need,” Schieber said. “He had such pastoral wisdom. He is really beloved by everybody.”

As the investigation into the shooting continues, the motive remains unknown. Yet even amid the heartbreak, Father Schieber encouraged prayer not only for Father Arul and his grieving parish but also for the man accused of this “senseless act of violence.”

In the wake of the tragedy, parishioners gathered for a Mass Thursday evening to grieve together and seek strength in their faith. Archbishop Joseph Naumann, who led the Mass, reflected on Father Arul’s courageous commitment to his vocation.

“Being a priest today requires heroic love,” Archbishop Naumann wrote in a Facebook post. “That quality was evident in Father Arul, who left India to come to the heartland of America and serve the people of the Catholic Church in northeast Kansas.”

Though the loss is profound, Archbishop Naumann urged the community not to lose hope. “God is with us in our adversity. He can bring good out of evil. He can bring life out of death,” he said. “Let us draw closer to Jesus during this time of sorrow and ask Him to console our hearts.”

Father Arul Carasala was ordained in March 1994 in his home Diocese of Cuddapah, India, before answering the call to minister thousands of miles away in Kansas. Over two decades, he served the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas faithfully, most recently as the dean of the Nemaha-Marshall deanery.

The Archdiocese described him as a priest whose “deep faith, pastoral care, and generous spirit touched the lives of so many,” praying, “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.”

As the Seneca community grapples with the sudden loss of a spiritual leader and friend, many are leaning into the faith that Father Arul spent his life nurturing among them. His legacy of love, service, and unwavering devotion will not be forgotten.
