There are aspects of divine life that we can — when we understand where we are intended to live — make a connection with and receive from that higher life everything we need to handle in any moment.

You and I are afraid of moments because we have to go into them armed only with what we’ve taken ourselves to be. But when you understand that working at what you want now can never bring an end to the wants but only keep the wanter alive, it becomes really easy to want to change what you’re in relationship with. That’s what real spiritual work does. It changes what you are in relationship with, and when you begin to change your relationship in this life and seek a higher one, then you receive the higher rewards — one of which is being able, whenever you want (in a manner of speaking), to have access to a different order of energy that has no doubt and that is not afraid of what may come.

It’s a lot of work to start recognizing when you have fallen asleep and find yourself feeling in the dark, but we have been given the ability to choose the state we are in rather than letting our states choose us. Through an act of attentive submission, we can bring ourselves back into line with the forces of heaven. We can deliberately bring ourselves into relationship with that which is always alive, new, refreshing, energetic, and everlasting.
