Bernard and Annie Wigley were driving along I-95 in Orlando, FL to take their daughter to the airport when they saw something frightening: a small plane, a fixed-wing multi-engine Beechcraft 55, was attempting to make an emergency landing on the freeway in the opposite lane. They watched in horror as the plane crashed into an unsuspecting 2023 Toyota Camry, crushing the car’s roof in. “The Holy Spirit asked me to pray, so I started praying. That was probably a minute before,” Annie told a local news station. “When I opened my eyes, I looked…when I looked, I said, ‘that’s an airplane, and it’s coming down.’ Because it started coming down pretty fast, I told my daughter to get over to the right as far as she could, but there was traffic.”
Bernard is the pastor of Thy Kingdom Come Ministries in Melbourne. Annie and their daughter are nurses. The three were some of the first people to rush to the scene to help. There were two people on the plane: a 27-year-old pilot and a 27-year-old passenger. The driver of the car was a 57-year-old woman. She was pulled from the vehicle, miraculously with only minor injuries. The pilot and passenger were also unhurt. “She appeared to be OK. The only thing that was a little concerning was that she didn’t know it was a plane. She thought it was a semi-truck that she had passed earlier,” said Annie. “The car was totaled except the driver’s seat. That was the only part. I mean, the car was crushed,” said Bernard, noting the miraculous survival of all involved. “That could have been total destruction, total destruction. That could have 12 to 15 cars. There could have been fire from the fuel of the plane and total chaos like something you see in a movie,” he said.
The crash is still under investigation, according to the FAA. The pilot reportedly was experiencing engine issues, which led to the emergency landing. Annie gave God the glory for the miraculous outcome. “I knew it was God that saved her absolutely, even the two pilots that landed and only hit the one car. I knew God was in control,” she said.
