Sometimes, the most beautiful love stories begin in the unlikeliest of places. For Zach Zarembinski and Isabelle Richard, that place was Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota — where both were recovering from traumatic brain injuries and where, years later, they would return for a life-changing moment.
Zach and Isabelle first met in 2018 under extraordinary circumstances. At just 18 years old, Zach had collapsed on the sideline of a football game after suffering a brain bleed. Around the same time, Isabelle was in a serious car accident that left her with a severe head injury. Both teens were in comas, fighting for their lives in the same hospital.
When Zach regained consciousness, he heard about Isabelle’s condition and felt a connection right away. Though she was still unconscious, Zach told her family something remarkable — that she was going to be okay. “I just felt like I knew,” he recalled. “My spirit told me she’s gonna be okay.”
He was right. When Isabelle woke up, the two met briefly and even took a photo together before going their separate ways. Life carried on, and six years passed without contact — until God brought their paths together again in the most unexpected way.
Their mothers, who had become friends after their children’s hospital stays, organized a family dinner. That night, Zach and Isabelle reconnected — and this time, the spark was undeniable. “We connected from the first moment we met,” Zach shared. “Our spirits were meant to be.”
As their friendship evolved into something deeper, they launched a podcast together called “Hope in Healing,” utilizing their own testimonies to encourage others who have faced trauma or loss. Through their shared experiences of recovery and faith, they’ve inspired countless listeners with their message that even in the darkest moments, God can bring restoration and love.
Recently, Zach brought Isabelle back to the place where their journey began. He told her they were filming an episode of their podcast at Regions Hospital — but he had a different plan in mind. “I was surprised, definitely,” Isabelle admitted with a laugh during an interview on America’s Newsroom. “I kind of knew it could happen that day, but I didn’t think it would, because he can’t keep secrets!”
At the hospital, Zach guided Isabelle to the very spot where he had first met her family years before. Then, as a white curtain fell away to reveal a giant heart made of flowers, he dropped to one knee and asked the question that would forever change their lives: “Will you marry me?”
Through tears, Isabelle said yes.
Their story is a powerful reminder that even in moments of pain and uncertainty, God can weave together something beautiful. What began as two separate journeys of survival turned into one shared story of hope, healing, and love — all beginning, and now coming full circle, at the very same hospital.
As Zach said with a smile, “I knew she was the one.”
