When tragedy struck this week with the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Americans responded with overwhelming generosity. In the wake of his passing, supporters across the country turned grief into action, donating millions through online campaigns to care for Kirk’s wife, children, and legacy.
On GiveSendGo, more than $2.8 million has already been raised — setting a record for the largest amount collected in the shortest period of time. “GiveSendGo has always been a place where people can immediately respond to crises,” said co-founder and co-CEO Heather Wilson. “Within hours of Charlie’s tragic death, friends and supporters had set up a campaign. The fact that it took off so quickly shows just how deeply his life impacted people and how urgent the desire was to support his family.”
Wilson explained that such generosity shows how grief often becomes action. “When people feel powerless in the face of tragedy, giving becomes a tangible way to express love, solidarity and care,” she said. Beyond money, Wilson pointed to the platform’s unique “prayer button” as equally moving. “People who can’t give financially are still able to share hope, encouragement and prayer with the family, and that outpouring has been just as, if not more, moving than the dollars raised. It is exactly what Charlie stood for — a relationship with Jesus.”
GoFundMe has also seen a surge of campaigns, including fundraisers for Kirk’s wife and children as well as efforts to create a permanent memorial at Utah Valley University, where he was shot while speaking on Sept. 10. Verified campaigns have already raised over $12,000. “Our hearts go out to the Kirk family and everyone impacted by this tragedy,” a GoFundMe spokesperson said. “At GoFundMe, being a safe and trusted place to give and receive help is our top priority.”
The company emphasized that it swiftly verifies every fundraiser and enforces a strict “zero tolerance” policy for fraud. “We are actively working with fundraiser organizers to gather information and complete our verification reviews, and we appreciate their cooperation,” the spokesperson added.
Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was just 31 years old when he died of his injuries at a local hospital following the Utah Valley University event. Known for his bold defense of biblical values and his ability to connect with young people, his passing has left a void in the conservative and Christian communities.
President Donald Trump was the first to announce Kirk’s death on Truth Social, writing: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife, Erika and family. Charlie, we love you!”
Authorities confirmed Friday that the suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, is in custody. Trump, speaking on Fox News, credited a minister, a U.S. Marshal, and the suspect’s father with helping to locate him.
Even as justice moves forward, Kirk’s supporters continue to rally around his family, proving that faith, generosity, and prayer can shine even in the darkest of times.
