A Florida woman is crediting God after saving a 77-year-old woman who went into cardiac arrest on the road. Joyce Long was on her way to a doctor’s appointment when she began to experience chest pains, which caused her to drift into heavy traffic. Drivers began to honk at Long in frustration when one driver, Retonia Watts, began to suspect something was wrong. Watts pulled over to check on Long, whose car had slowed to a stop. “When she turned off the car, I started screaming. I got out of my car and asked, ‘Are you OK? Are you OK?’ When I said that, she shook her head and said no. And when she said no, she passed out,” Watts told a local news station. Not knowing how to help Long, Watts called 911 and began to pray. “I laid my hands on her and said, ‘Hold on, hold on. God got you.’ Rescue came quickly. It was destined for me to be there at that particular time.”
Paramedics had to administer two shocks and perform CPR three times before Long began to recover. Doctors told Long’s family that her recovery was miraculous. Watts had her own personal connection to the tragedy, with her brother-in-law having just passed away in a similar incident. “My sister had just lost her husband, and he actually passed in his car,” she said. “And to be honest, I had, I got a glimpse of that when I started, when I saw her. I thought about, ‘What if someone would have been there to help save his life?’ And I felt like I had to help.”
Long’s daughter, Jennifer, stated she believed Watts’s actions saved her mother’s life. “Had she not stopped that day, my mom would not be here. Clearly, she would not be alive,” she said. Jennifer Long was especially grateful, sharing that her son had recently died from a medical complication. She said the thought of dealing with two deaths in the family would have been “too much to bear.” Long recorded a thank you message to her rescuer. “Good afternoon, Mrs. Watts. I appreciate you helping me in my time of need. I don’t know what happened to me,” she said. “I became incapacitated, but you were a great help to me. You asked me a couple of times if I was OK, and I told you no. You helped me out and contacted my family. I just want to say thank you. You were a blessing to me.” Watts remained humble to the gratitude. “You’re welcome. I just thank God. Nobody owes me anything.”
