As dangerous storms swept across the Texas Hill Country last week, veteran meteorologist Bill Taylor did something viewers don’t often see during a live weather broadcast: He stopped his forecast to pray.

Taylor, a longtime meteorologist with San Antonio’s KENS 5, was tracking severe storms Wednesday evening when he noticed heavy rain and rapidly rising floodwaters moving toward a busy stretch of highway during the evening commute. Concerned for the safety of motorists, he paused in front of the radar map and turned his attention to God.

“You look at the time of day, and there are just a lot of people that will be traveling in this area, traveling home for the evening, traveling to work,” Taylor said as he pointed to communities including St. Hedwig and China Grove. The storm, he explained, was moving directly over Highway 87 near Loop 1604, where many drivers would be on the road.

Then, instead of immediately continuing the forecast, Taylor offered a heartfelt prayer.

“So, Lord, I pray for protection,” he said. “God, your sovereignty is what we lean into in moments like this — that drivers stay aware, stay alert, that you give them wisdom. Bless these drivers with wisdom. Keep them safe. Put angels around them of protection as they travel. Thank you, Lord.”

After the brief prayer, Taylor calmly resumed his weather coverage as if it were a natural extension of the forecast.

“We’ve just got to get you home safely,” he told viewers. “This will be lasting for another 30 minutes at least, it looks like.”

The on-air moment quickly resonated with viewers, many of whom praised Taylor for openly expressing his faith while serving his community during a dangerous weather event.

On Instagram, one viewer shared how the prayer captured their attention in the middle of the broadcast.

“As you were praying today, I actually ‘stopped and listened’… thank you,” the commenter wrote.

Others thanked Taylor for his willingness to publicly acknowledge God.

“I thank the Lord for your prayers while on the air,” another viewer commented. “You have no idea how many people appreciate your courage to pray openly while at work, in the middle of the storm! Thank you.”

One woman said the prayer brought comfort to her family, especially because her husband works as a truck driver.
