A family vacation onboard a Disney cruise ship took a terrifying turn when a girl fell overboard from the 4th deck of the ship and her father leaped in after her.

The father and his young daughter were sailing aboard the Disney Dream, heading back to Fort Lauderdale from the Bahamas on June 29^th, when the unimaginable happened. Passengers heard an alarming message over the loudspeaker: “Man Overboard, port side!”

“A girl fell overboard from the 4th deck & her dad went in after her,” passenger Kevin Furuta shared on Facebook, describing the heart-pounding moment everyone witnessed.

Without hesitation, this dad jumped from the fourth deck—likely around 50 feet above the water—into the Atlantic Ocean to reach his daughter. For nearly 20 minutes, he kept her safe in the water, holding onto her as they bobbed in the waves, while passengers and crew prayed for their rescue.

“Lots of praying folks on this ship!” shared another passenger, Dewayne Smith, who witnessed the rescue unfold in real time.

Disney Cruise Line’s crew quickly sprang into action, lowering a bright yellow rescue boat into the sea and rushing to where the father and daughter drifted. Thanks to the ship’s overboard detection system and the crew’s immediate response, the pair was safely pulled from the water.

“The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,” Disney Cruise Line confirmed in a statement. “We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.”

While it’s unclear exactly how the little girl fell, what is clear is the power of a father’s love and quick thinking—and the prayers of many strangers—working together to bring them back safely.

One passenger noted that the fourth deck has railings taller than most children’s heads and plexiglass panels meant to prevent accidents, making it a rare but serious situation when someone falls overboard. But in this frightening moment, God’s protection was evident as the father’s instinct to save his daughter was met with the swift help of others around them.

“Thankfully, the DCL rescue team was on it immediately and both were saved!” Furuta wrote, capturing the relief everyone felt as they watched the dad and his daughter safely return to the ship.
