Chase Childers, a decorated former Georgia police officer and ex-minor league baseball player, is being hailed as a hero after he tragically drowned while rescuing swimmers caught in a dangerous rip current near Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
The 38-year-old father and husband entered the water on July 13 to assist 4-5 people in distress. According to the Pawleys Island Police Department, Childers and another bystander jumped in to help—but unlike the others, Childers never made it back to shore. His body was recovered about 90 minutes later by emergency crews, including Midway Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard.
“The victim, Chase Childers, and another person entered the water to help 4-5 individuals who were in distress. Sadly, Mr. Childers was caught in the rip current, as well. He died trying to save others,” the police department wrote in a post on X.
The town of Pawleys Island expressed its sorrow in a statement from Mayor Brian Henry. “We are saddened by this tragedy and extend our prayers to Chase’s family. We also thank the first responders who worked tirelessly to recover the victim and bring comfort to the family,” Henry said.
Childers leaves behind a wife, Nataley, and children. A GoFundMe campaign launched to support his family has raised over $104,000, far surpassing its original goal. The campaign remembers Chase as a courageous man who lived a life of service and selflessness.
“Chase was tragically taken from this world far too soon and will always be remembered as a hero,” the fundraiser reads. “These funds will help his wife and children as they try to heal from the painful loss of such a devoted husband, father, and protector.”
Childers’ legacy of bravery began long before that fateful day on the beach. As a police officer in Cobb County, Georgia, he earned a lifetime achievement award for saving multiple lives during his service, further evidence that courage and compassion were core to his character.
Before his career in law enforcement, Childers also played minor league baseball for the Baltimore Orioles organization, showcasing a drive and dedication that followed him into every stage of life.
His final act—risking everything to save strangers—is a testament to his faith, character, and calling. As Jesus said in John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Though Chase may not have known the people he tried to save, his selfless response reflects the heart of Christ.
Please join us in praying for Chase’s family, for the hearts of those he saved, and for safety and awareness for all who venture into the ocean. May his life and sacrifice continue to inspire us to love others with boldness and compassion.
