The daughter of 107-year-old Julia Mae Hunter-Rice said her mother’s commitment to doing what’s right has led to her long life. Hunter-Rice’s daughter, Dorthy Dickson, told WTOK-TV, “Her secret is smiling and being fair. She has always stood for that which is right, and, at 107, she’s still the captain of the ship.”

Hunter-Rice’s other daughter, Julia, also credited her mother’s longevity to her commitment to the Golden Rule, detailed in Matthew 7:12, which reads, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Hunter-Rice, born in 1916, danced as her family sang happy birthday to her.

In 2022, a 100-year-old Maryland woman credited her faith in God as the secret to her long life. Martha Bailey, born in 1922 and grew up in Virginia, said, “The secret is the grace of God living in me and me trying to live the best life I could. The secret is loving the Lord.”

Bailey’s story caught the attention of Rev. Franklin Graham, who called her “secret” to longevity “a great recipe for life.” Graham wrote, “Happy 100th birthday, Mrs. Bailey, and we hope you have many more! God bless you!”

Living to be 100 years old is a significant blessing. It’s even better to know that the secret to living a long life is to love the Lord and keep Him first in your life.
