It’s a sad day when you have to step back from a career you’ve been in for decades. It’s even more painful when you have to do so involuntarily. Unfortunately, this reality recently came true for Bruce Willis. Willis is suffering from a medical condition that affects his cognitive abilities and will be taking a break from acting. His family shared last week.

In an Instagram post, his daughter Rumer posted a photo of her father. Her caption read,  “To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family, we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities.

The caption continued, “As a result of this and with much consideration, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him. This is a really challenging time for our family, and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion, and support.”

The caption said that the family is “moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him.” The caption concluded, “As Bruce always says, “Live it up,” and we plan to do just that together. It also included the names of his former wife, Demi Moore, who also shared the post, their daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah, and his current wife, Emma, and their daughters Mabel and Evelyn. Scout Willis also opened up in a lengthy post on her Instagram account. In the post, she shared how much it has meant to her to receive support and hear how much her dad means to friends and fans worldwide.

According to the Mayo Clinic, aphasia is “a condition that robs you of the ability to communicate” and can be caused by a stroke, head injury, a brain tumor, or a disease. Outside of the love and support from his family, Willis is also getting support from other actors. Sylvester Stallone, who co-starred with his fellow action icon in The Expendables and its first sequel, seems to have put any kind of feud behind him. He shared some sweet throwback pictures on Instagram and a heartfelt support message.

In his Instagram post, Stallone said, “We go back a long way, praying for the best for you and your wonderful family.” John Travolta also shared a heartfelt message about Willis on social media, saying, “Bruce and I became good friends when we shared 2 of our biggest hits together, Pulp Fiction and Look Who’s Talking. Years later, he said to me, “John, I just want you to know that when something good happens to you, I feel like it’s happening to me.” That’s how generous a soul he is. I love you, Bruce.”

There’s no doubt that walking away from his career was the last thing Bruce Willis wanted to do. However, he should take comfort in the fact that he has the love and support of his family, and they’ll be there for him no matter what happens. Bruce Willis can also take comfort in that his career may be on pause, but he’s impacted so many other actors. Let’s continue to lift the Willis family in prayer.
