An Ohio congregation is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Pastor Joseph Stoll, a beloved shepherd remembered for his unwavering faith, gentle spirit, and joyful love for people after he died from injuries sustained in a bicycle crash earlier this month.

Stoll, who served at Genoa Church in Westerville, was riding on a bike path along State Route 3 near Big Walnut Road in Delaware County on July 3 when he was struck by a truck, according to WBNS 10. He died several days later.

Following his passing, the church shared a message of both sorrow and hope, reminding members of the eternal promise Stoll preached throughout his ministry.

“While our hearts grieve the loss of a faithful shepherd, friend, and brother in Christ, we rejoice knowing that Joe is now in the presence of his Savior — the One he faithfully loved, served, and proclaimed throughout his life,” the church said. “Today, his faith has become sight. As we mourn together, we also celebrate the sure hope we have in Jesus Christ.”

A memorial service honoring Stoll’s life was held on July 12.

Throughout his years in ministry, Stoll faithfully served in a variety of roles, including youth pastor, children’s pastor, worship leader, pastor of Barnett Road Baptist Church, and principal of Genoa Christian Academy. Those who knew him say his humility and kindness never changed, whether he was preaching from the pulpit, playing the piano, or sharing food reviews on social media through his lighthearted series, “Reviews with PJ.”

Associate Pastor Scott Lewald described the loss as almost impossible to comprehend.

“He’s the nicest, godliest man I’ve ever met,” Lewald told WBNS. “It doesn’t feel real. It still feels like he’s going to walk in the door tomorrow with his smile, riding his bicycle, and talk about what he ate for dinner last night.”

Even amid deep grief, Lewald said the congregation has found comfort in the confidence that Stoll is now with Christ, free from pain and suffering. While they mourn the absence of a cherished pastor, friend, and co-worker, they also celebrate the hope of the Gospel that he spent his life proclaiming.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has completed its investigation into the crash and plans to provide safety recommendations to Delaware County to improve conditions along the trail where the collision occurred. Authorities said the truck driver will not face criminal citations.

A small memorial now stands beside Big Walnut Road, marking the place where Stoll’s life came to an end. He is survived by his wife, Marcella, and leaves behind a congregation that continues to cling to the faith he so faithfully lived and shared.

As Genoa Church mourns the loss of its pastor, members are also holding fast to the promise found in Christ—that death is not the end for those who belong to Him, but the beginning of eternal life in His presence.
