A heartbreaking tragedy in Minnesota has left a community grieving and the hockey world in shock after beloved NHL reporter Jessi Pierce and her three young children lost their lives in a house fire early Saturday morning.
Fire crews were called to a single-family home on the 2100 block of Richard Avenue in White Bear Lake at around 5:25 a.m., according to the White Bear Lake Fire Department. Neighbors had reported seeing flames coming through the roof and feared people were inside. When firefighters arrived, they encountered a fully involved structure fire.
Despite immediate efforts to control the blaze, crews discovered an adult, three children, and the family dog inside the home. Tragically, all were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Our hearts ache for all those involved in this tragedy,” Fire Chief Greg Peterson said in a statement. “We ask for the opportunity to allow our community to come together and support one another during this difficult time.”
The victims were later identified as Jessi Pierce, a longtime NHL reporter, and her three children — Hudson, Cayden, and Avery.
Pierce had been a respected and familiar voice in the hockey world for over a decade, contributing to NHL.com and co-hosting the Bardown Beauties podcast. Her passion for the game and love for her family were evident to everyone who knew her.
“The entire National Hockey League family sends our prayers and deepest condolences to the Pierce family on the passing of Jessi Pierce and her three young children,” the NHL said in a statement. “Jessi loved our game and was a valued member of the NHL.com team for a decade. We will miss her terribly.”
Colleagues echoed that grief. Bill Price, editor-in-chief of NHL.com, described Pierce as “an absolute joy to talk to and work with,” adding, “Jessi’s love of her family and hockey was evident in the energy and passion she brought to her work for us. She will be deeply missed.”
The Minnesota Wild organization, which Pierce covered closely throughout her career, also shared its sorrow.
“The Minnesota Wild organization is heartbroken by the tragic loss of Jessi Pierce and her children,” the team said. “Jessi was a kind, compassionate person who cared deeply about her family and those around her. She served as a dedicated ambassador for the game of hockey.”
Pierce’s journey into sports journalism began after graduating from Iowa State University. She went on to cover hockey at every level, with her work appearing in outlets including USA Hockey, The Athletic, and the Minnesota Hockey Journal. Over the years, she built a reputation not only for her professionalism but also for her warmth and authenticity.
As news of the tragedy spread, tributes poured in across social media, with friends, colleagues, and fans remembering a woman who left a lasting impact both on and off the ice.
In moments like this, words often fall short. The sudden loss of a mother and her children is almost too heavy to comprehend. Yet in the midst of grief, communities often come together — lifting one another up, sharing memories, and holding tight to faith.
Heavenly Father, we lift up the family and loved ones of Jessi Pierce and her children. In this time of deep sorrow, bring comfort that only You can give. Surround their community with Your peace, and remind all who are grieving that You are near to the brokenhearted. Hold these precious lives in Your eternal care, and give strength to those left behind. Amen.
