A family vacation to New York’s Hamptons turned into heartbreak over the Fourth of July weekend after a 6-year-old girl from Brooklyn died when she was swept away by a powerful current while entering the water.
Kiara Paolasin was visiting Southampton with her family on Saturday morning when the tragic accident happened at Sebonac Creek, which flows into the Great Peconic Bay. According to the Southampton Town Police, the young girl entered the water shortly after 8 a.m. and was suddenly pulled away by the current.
Witnesses told investigators that Kiara had gone into the water to retrieve a shoe that had floated away before she slipped and was carried into the fast-moving water.
As panic spread, one of Kiara’s 16-year-old relatives immediately jumped into the water in an attempt to save her. Police said the teenager made a courageous effort but “was unable to reach her due to the current.”
The family then managed to get the attention of a nearby kayaker, who paddled over and pulled Kiara from the water. By the time first responders from the Southampton Town Police, Volunteer Ambulance, Fire Department and Marine Patrol arrived, the kayaker was bringing the little girl back to shore.
Kiara was rushed to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The Southampton Town Police Detective Division is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, while the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.
The heartbreaking accident happened as thousands of people traveled to Long Island’s beaches over the Independence Day weekend. The area was also under an extreme heat warning, with the National Weather Service reporting heat index values reaching around 105 degrees, sending many families to the water to escape the dangerous temperatures.
Although authorities have not issued any safety warnings specific to this incident, tragedies like this serve as a sobering reminder that even seemingly calm waterways can harbor powerful currents capable of overwhelming both children and adults within seconds. Water safety experts often encourage families to closely supervise children near any body of water and to remain aware of changing conditions, especially in unfamiliar locations.
For Christians, moments like these are difficult to understand. The sudden loss of a child leaves families and communities searching for comfort that only God can fully provide. Scripture reminds believers that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
As Kiara’s loved ones grieve this unimaginable loss, many believers will be praying for God’s peace to surround them in the days ahead.
Heavenly Father, we lift up Kiara’s family as they mourn the loss of their precious little girl. Surround them with Your comfort, strengthen them in their grief, and remind them of Your loving presence even in the darkest moments. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
