According to authorities, 31-year-old Jacob Nitkiewicz was fatally shot in the head while fishing at Flint Creek Water Park in Mississippi. Officials described the incident as an apparent “tragic accident.”

Nitkiewicz was discovered around 1 a.m. Saturday at the park, which is known for its large lake and outdoor recreation opportunities, including fishing, boating, and camping. The park is located roughly 120 miles south of Jackson.

Stone County Coroner Wayne Flurry told the Sun Herald that he believes the shooting was a “tragic accident,” although an autopsy is still pending. Police also described the case as an “isolated incident” and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The Wiggins Police Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are continuing to investigate exactly what happened.

As loved ones mourn his sudden death, many are remembering Nitkiewicz not only as an outdoorsman who loved fishing and hiking, but as a devoted husband and father whose world centered around his family.

Nitkiewicz had been married to his longtime girlfriend, Mackenzi, for just four months. According to his obituary, the couple had been together for 13 years before finally tying the knot. They had recently returned from their honeymoon in Colorado Springs before their lives were turned upside down by tragedy.

The couple shared a young daughter, Emersyn Grace, who was often the center of Jacob’s attention and affection.

“Jacob was an incredible husband and a proud, loving father. He was the heart of their home, and his love for his family was constant and unwavering,” a GoFundMe organizer wrote while raising support for the grieving family.

“Now, Mackenzi and their sweet daughter, Emersyn Grace, are facing the difficult road ahead without him.”

Friends and family described Nitkiewicz as hardworking, dependable, and deeply committed to those he loved. His obituary praised his “strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family.”

“He took immense pride in his role as a husband and father, pouring his heart into providing, supporting, and celebrating those he loved,” the obituary stated.

Loved ones said he faithfully showed up for every important moment in his daughter’s life, celebrating “everything from her dance and piano recitals to her strong grades and cheerleading tournament wins.”

Nitkiewicz had also recently earned a promotion to manager at Delta Tire World after four years with the company. His obituary called the achievement “a testament to his dedication, leadership, and the pride he took in his work.”

Outside of work, he loved the outdoors and enjoyed traveling, camping, hiking mountain trails, and fishing — the hobby he was enjoying when his life was tragically cut short.

“Jacob was a present, steady husband and father who prioritized time together and created meaningful memories that will be cherished for years to come,” his obituary said. “His legacy is reflected in the love, encouragement, and dedication he showed each day.”
