The University of Colorado football community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of one of its young players after quarterback Dominiq Ponder died in a tragic car crash. He was just 23 years old.
Ponder, a walk-on quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes, died early Sunday morning, March 1st, in a single-car accident. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash occurred around 3 a.m. while Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3.
Authorities say he was traveling westbound on Baseline Road when he lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve. The car crossed into the eastbound lane, struck a guardrail, then hit an electrical pole before rolling down an embankment and catching fire. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say speed is “suspected” to be a factor as the vehicular crimes unit continues its investigation.
The loss has deeply shaken the Colorado football program, where Ponder had spent the past two seasons after transferring from Bethune-Cookman. A third-year sophomore from Opa-locka, Florida, Ponder made his collegiate debut in 2025, appearing in two games and stepping onto the field for the first time against Arizona on Nov. 1.
While his time with the team was relatively short, those who knew him say his presence made a lasting impact.
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders shared his heartbreak on social media shortly after the news broke.
“God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & Loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites!” Sanders wrote. “He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you’re receiving a good 1. Comfort us Lord Comfort us.”
Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brennan Marion also paid tribute, expressing both shock and sorrow over the loss.
“A joy to be around & coach! gonna be tough but man this one hurts Lord, getting that call from his dad today didn’t feel real. Love you Dom! God cover his family & our team, especially our qb room!” Marion wrote.
The grief carried into Ponder’s funeral, where Sanders delivered a powerful and emotional eulogy honoring the young quarterback’s life.
The coach admitted that stepping up to speak after Ponder’s family “didn’t feel right,” but said their words inspired him to share what was on his heart.
“We always ask questions about why this happened … ‘God, why this and why that?’” Sanders said during the service. “When we’re successful, we’re excelling, and overcoming adversity, we never ask God, ‘Why?’ then. Only in our demise and sadness of life, we challenge and ask God, ‘Why?’ I think I’ve got the solution.”
Reflecting on Ponder’s character, Sanders said he believed the young quarterback’s life had a deeper purpose.
“As I look right there, and look at a young man so full of life – so full of respect, bustle, hard work, and integrity. I ask God, ‘For real?’ And he whispered: ‘Dom was chosen.’ Dom was chosen to unite y’all, to bring you all together. Dom was chosen.”
The emotional moment grew even more powerful when Sanders addressed Ponder’s parents directly.
“The only darn thing I have regret for is that when you sent us a boy. I wanted to send you back a man,” Sanders said, pausing as he fought back tears.
Sanders also gathered his team for an emergency meeting after learning of the tragedy, urging them to remember the qualities that made Ponder special.
“His character, humor, work ethic, and tenacity. It’s something that I want us to remember,” he told the players.
Ponder’s parents later expressed gratitude to Sanders and the Colorado football family, thanking the coach for his “unwavering generosity, support, and love shown to our family.”
As the team, family, and fans continue to mourn, many are remembering Dominiq Ponder not only as a football player, but as a young man whose leadership, kindness, and spirit left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
