What began as a quiet Christmas Eve morning has turned into a heartbreaking nightmare for one Texas family — and a call for prayer that continues to spread across the country.
Nineteen-year-old Camila Mendoza Olmos vanished from her San Antonio home early Christmas Eve, leaving behind only her car keys and a family desperate for answers. Her loved ones believe she stepped outside for her usual morning walk, something she did often and safely. But this time, she never returned.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, Camila was last seen around 6:58 a.m. Surveillance footage shows her outside the home, appearing to search through her car before walking away. She was wearing baby blue pajama bottoms, a black hoodie, and white shoes. Her car remained parked at the house, and her phone was later found inside, turned off.
Her mother, Rosario Olmos, said she had been sleeping beside her daughter when Camila quietly got out of bed. Thinking she had gone for her usual walk, Rosario waited. When her daughter didn’t return, worry quickly turned into fear.
“I thought I would find her like other times, walking, and we would come home together,” she said through tears.
Family members immediately began calling friends, her boyfriend, and anyone who might have seen her. No one had. Those closest to Camila say her disappearance is completely out of character. Friends described her as responsible, attentive, and always reachable — someone who would never leave without her phone or fail to check in.
As concern deepened, authorities issued a CLEAR Alert and later confirmed that Camila is believed to be in “imminent danger.” The FBI is assisting with the investigation, and Homeland Security is monitoring travel activity. Sheriff Javier Salazar said officials are not ruling out any possibilities.
“She was a young person going through a very tough time in her life,” Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said, describing the emotional struggles Camila had reportedly been facing in the weeks before her disappearance.
Authorities say Camila had been dealing with stress related to school, work, and a recent breakup. Investigators also revealed that she may have been experiencing depression and thoughts of suicide — a detail that has made the tragedy even more heartbreaking for those who knew her.
Video footage captured Camila on Christmas Eve wearing pajama shorts and a black hoodie as she rummaged through her car outside her home. Around that same time, a 9mm pistol was reported missing from the residence, raising immediate concern among family members and investigators.
More than 100 people — including relatives who traveled from hours away — have joined the search effort, walking neighborhoods and surrounding areas in hopes of finding even the smallest clue.
Her father, Alfonso Mendoza, spoke through heartbreak as he pleaded for her return. “Please come home,” he said. “Daddy’s missing you.”
Her brother, Carlos, rushed back to Texas as soon as he heard the news. “We’ve been searching on foot,” he shared. “I just want her to come back.”
On Tuesday, the search took a tragic turn when authorities discovered human remains in a field. According to Sheriff Salazar, the body appeared to have been there for five to six days. While official identification had not yet been publicly confirmed, the head of Texas EquuSearch told the San Antonio Express-News that the medical examiner had informed Camila’s family that the remains were believed to be hers.
By Wednesday, Sheriff Salazar said authorities “strongly believe” the body found is that of Camila Mendoza Olmos. The medical examiner’s office has not yet issued formal confirmation.
As this family waits, Christians across the country are lifting them up in prayer, trusting that God sees what we cannot and walks closely with the brokenhearted.
A Prayer for Camila’s Safe Return
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with hearts full of hope and pain. Please watch over Camila wherever she may be. Surround her with Your protection, guide her steps, and bring her safely home. Comfort her family as they wait, strengthen those searching, and shine Your light in the darkness. Lord, we trust You even when the path is unclear. Wrap this family in Your peace and remind them they are not alone.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
