Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes is known for his electric fastball and relentless work ethic, but the young MLB star says the foundation of his life reaches far beyond baseball.
Inscribed on Skenes’ baseball glove is 2 Timothy 1:7, a verse that has become a personal reminder every time he steps onto the mound: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
Speaking with CBN Sports, Skenes explained why those words carry such significance.
“God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear. I think that’s the biggest one,” he said. “You know, power and love of a sound mind, but when you’re out there pitching, why be scared? Why not — He’s given us the ability to think clearly, to go out there and compete in His image, and not letting anything get in the way of that, so why should anything get in the way of that?”
For Skenes, the verse is about much more than baseball. It serves as a reminder that his identity is rooted in Christ rather than his athletic achievements.
“That’s kind of how I think about it,” he added. “I’m Paul Skenes, who plays baseball, not Paul Skenes the baseball player.”

That perspective has also shaped other areas of his life. Before launching his professional baseball career, Skenes attended the Air Force Academy, where he developed a deep appreciation for military service and the country he loves.
“This is the greatest country in the world,” he told Fox Sports.
Earlier this year, Skenes reflected on that chapter of his life in an essay for The Players’ Tribune. Remembering the day he officially joined the Air Force Academy, he wrote, “I had the utmost respect for those who serve. I got the chills reciting that pledge. Just from how proud I am of this country.”
He continued, “Because when you love something so much that you’re willing to lay down your life for it? It’s pretty meaningful stuff. And, truth be told, as much as I love the game of baseball… that’s much bigger than any sport.”
Skenes also expressed deep gratitude for members of the military, writing, “My respect for our service men and women knows no bounds. I’m in awe of those folks. And all that they do to keep us safe. Anything that enables me to honor those who serve this country, I’m going to do.”
His dedication extends to the baseball field as well. Pirates catcher Joey Bart praised Skenes’ commitment, telling Sports Illustrated, “I haven’t seen anything like this… The work ethic is out of control. I mean, it’s unbelievable what he does day in and day out to stay on top of what he does.”
As Skenes’ star continues to rise in Major League Baseball, he has made it clear that his greatest source of confidence isn’t found in talent or success, but in a faith that reminds him to live without fear and to keep his identity firmly rooted in God.
