When Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie Emeka Egbuka talks about his success, football is only part of the story.
The former Ohio State Buckeyes football standout says his true purpose goes far beyond touchdowns and championships. For Egbuka, his platform is ultimately about sharing the hope he found in Jesus Christ.
The young receiver made a strong impression during his rookie NFL season in 2025, but fans visiting his Instagram page will quickly notice the identity he values most. Instead of highlighting football accolades, his profile simply reads: “Christ Follower.”
Speaking with Fox News Digital after partnering with USAA for its “Huddle Up For Hurricane Prep” initiative in Tampa, Egbuka opened up about the faith that transformed his life.
“To put it simply, it’s such a big part of my life because of what Jesus has done in my life, and I know that he offers the same for every single person,” Egbuka said.
The NFL rookie explained that his faith journey began five years ago during his first year at Ohio State. While trying to establish himself as a college athlete, he was also quietly struggling internally.
“He kinda met me where I was five years ago now, which seems crazy to say,” Egbuka shared. “I’ve been walking with Him ever since.”
As Egbuka grew into one of college football’s top receivers and eventually helped the Buckeyes capture a national championship during the 2024 season, he said he was also finding something much deeper spiritually.
“The sense of identity that I have that I didn’t have before. There’s a lot of things in my life and a lot of ways I was battling mentally that He pulled me out of,” he explained. “That’s stuff that goes unnoticed. That’s stuff behind the curtains that people don’t see every day because we put on these masks.”
Egbuka’s honesty about mental and emotional struggles is something many fans can relate to. He acknowledged that everyone faces trials, regardless of how successful they may appear on the surface.
“Deep down, everybody deals with stuff,” he said. “There’s trials and tribulations that come every single day. At the end of the day, we’re human.”
For Egbuka, faith became the turning point when he realized he could not carry everything on his own.
“When it comes to a point we make it to the end of ourselves — that’s where I was when God met me,” he said.
Now entering the NFL spotlight, Egbuka says he feels a responsibility to use his growing influence to point people toward Christ. He also praised fellow NFL players like C.J. Stroud and Kirk Cousins for boldly sharing their faith publicly.
“I think it’s a blessing and privilege that we have to be able to be so open,” Egbuka said. “Just being able to preach about Him, use my platform to spread the Gospel. Just the hope that there is in Jesus is what I feel my purpose is.”
Off the field, the Buccaneers rookie is also focused on serving his community. During his recent event with USAA in Tampa, Egbuka helped assemble disaster preparedness kits and educate residents about hurricane safety in a region frequently impacted by major storms.
“This isn’t my first time working with USAA, so I’m glad to be partnering with them again,” he said. “Definitely been surrounded by the military my entire life.”
Egbuka shared that his grandfather served as a Navy SEAL, while his father previously served on active duty and now works as a civil engineer for the Department of Defense.
He explained that the disaster kits included practical emergency supplies, such as whistles and safety blankets, to help families during hurricanes and other emergencies.
“There’s nothing we can do to prevent a hurricane from happening,” Egbuka said. “Really just trying to do our best to be proactive with it, and I think those kits we made today will go a long way.”
For Egbuka, serving others and sharing his faith appear to go hand in hand — and he’s determined to make both part of his NFL journey.
