Some fans are claiming that Disney has reversed a pandemic-era decision to remove gendered language from its parks. A fan account on X named Theme Park Cheetah made the claim online, sharing a side-by-side video of the Magic Kingdom Express Monorail where the expression had been removed and another with the expression restored. “It was very nice to hear that ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ has returned to the Magic Kingdom Express Monorail recently!” wrote the account. In another post, the account added, “For context it was removed around 2021 when Disney tried to make the parks more ‘inclusive.’”
“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,” had once been a standard greeting for Disney Theme parks. That all changed during the pandemic era, when Disney executives began making changes to make the parks more inclusive, including the removal of gendered language. “We want our guests to see their own backgrounds and traditions reflected in the stories, experiences and products they encounter in their interactions with Disney. And we want our cast members – and future cast members – to feel a sense of belonging at work,” Disney said in a statement.
Many Disney fans celebrated the possibility that gendered language had returned to the park. “My favorite small win for sanity today: After a 5-year gender-neutral absence, Disney has restored ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ to the Magic Kingdom monorail greeting,” wrote journalist Gerald Posner. “Now if only the London Tube would follow suit and ditch the sterile ‘hello everyone.’” “I think this is a bigger deal than people may think. This was a purposeful change (hopefully due to the new leadership), that is signaling that Disney may be pivoting back to their family oriented ways,” wrote another fan account. “If the parades also get this introduction, then this will mean more.”
Disney, however, has not confirmed whether there has been any official change and some have argued that there has been no change to the monorail greeting. “‘Ladies and gentlemen’ was apparently removed from some sections of the Monorail announcement — but not all,” wrote Disney news insider, WDWNT. “For example, guests still heard ‘ladies and gentlemen’ when approaching the Transportation and Ticket Center on the Resort Monorail. Many videos can be found on YouTube over the last several years, verifying how ‘ladies and gentlemen’ has always been present at various points along the Resort Monorail and Express Monorail routes.”
