American Olympic gold medalist Breezy Johnson came to Italy chasing a medal — and she’s heading home with something even more unforgettable.
Athletes from around the world traveled to the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics hoping for gold, silver, or bronze. But for Johnson, 30, the Games delivered a ring, too.
Just minutes after finishing her final race — the women’s super-G — in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Johnson’s boyfriend, Connor Watkins, got down on one knee near the finish line, surrounded by members of the U.S. Ski Team. Though Johnson had crashed during the race and didn’t finish, the disappointment quickly faded.
The answer was an emphatic “Yes.”
The U.S. federation celebrated the moment on social media, writing, “Huge congrats to Breezy and Connor on their engagement.”
Johnson later showed off her stunning ring — a blue sapphire surrounded by white sapphires, set in white gold — as she wiped away tears and hugged Watkins to cheers from the crowd.
The romantic proposal had been in the works for a long time. Watkins told NBC that he had been planning the moment for over a year and was “really hoping that I could get in the finish area and do it the way I wanted. And it turned out we could, and we’re just super excited.” He added that the day had “gone above and beyond our wildest imagination.”
Johnson admitted she may have dropped a few hints along the way.
“I may have told him that I just always kind of had the dream of getting engaged at the Olympics,” she shared with a smile. “I mean, that was my hope!”
But even she couldn’t have imagined how it would actually feel.
“It’s definitely a lot more crazy with everything just happening all at once, and the reality of it is so different than the way you imagined, and so much better,” she said.
Watkins added a personal touch to the proposal. Along with the ring, he presented a wooden plaque engraved with a Taylor Swift lyric: “Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy,” from the song “The Alchemy.” It was a sweet nod to the journey they’ve shared.
And what a journey it’s been.
Johnson’s engagement came just five days after she captured her first Olympic gold medal in the women’s downhill — a triumphant comeback after a crash on the same course kept her from competing at the 2022 Beijing Games. She also competed in the team combined event, finishing just off the podium.
It has truly been an emotional and historic Olympics for the American skier. From redemption on the slopes to a proposal in the snow, the highs have been unforgettable.
After the big moment, the newly engaged couple planned to celebrate with friends and family in Cortina before traveling to Livigno to watch more Olympic events together.
Through it all, Johnson has made it clear that sharing these moments means everything.
“There’s nothing better than doing well and having somebody to share it with,” she said.
For Breezy Johnson, the 2026 Winter Games will always be about more than medals. It will be the place where victory met love — right at the finish line.
