Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans made one thing clear after his team clinched a spot in the NFL playoffs: the victory belonged to God.
Following the Texans’ hard-fought 20–16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Ryans stood before reporters and pointed beyond the scoreboard, crediting his team’s success to their shared faith in Jesus Christ. For the third-year head coach, the moment wasn’t just about football — it was about faith shining through the game.
“The light is shining bright on the Texans, but that light is really reflective of our guys’ belief in … our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” Ryans said. “That’s what has driven our team, and I’m so proud of our guys and thankful to the Lord for allowing us to allow our lights to shine through Him. All praise and honor goes to Him.”
For Ryans, who played 10 seasons in the NFL and spent six of those years with the Texans, faith has never been separate from football. Throughout his career — as both a player and a coach — he has openly spoken about his reliance on God and the importance of keeping Christ at the center of his life.
In a 2020 interview with Sports Spectrum, Ryans reflected on the role faith plays in leadership and daily life. “We’re all here because of the grace of God,” he said at the time. “Why are we in the position that we’re in? Why are we able to do what we do? That’s by God blessing us with this awesome opportunity to reach back and teach these young men, help these young men, but we have to stay grounded in the Word.”
Ryans has often credited his upbringing for shaping that perspective, especially the faith foundation instilled by his mother. “As I continue to grow older and older, that’s the only thing that truly matters,” he once said, referring to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
His commitment to faith is visible not only in his words but also in the culture he has helped build in Houston. That influence has resonated deeply with his players, including quarterback C.J. Stroud, another outspoken Christian who has praised Ryans for creating an environment where faith is welcomed and encouraged.
After leading the Texans to a playoff victory during the 2024 season, Stroud openly reflected on the spiritual foundation behind the team’s success. “It’s been a blessing. It’s been a heck of a year,” he said. “I thank God I can just go another week with my teammates. This is like a dream come true as a reminder of how close we are as a team.”
Stroud added that faith plays a central role in how the team approaches both triumphs and challenges. “I think definitely God is at the forefront of our minds, and we play for an audience of One. Even when everything is going crazy, you can lock hands and have patience. I’m blessed enough to have a leader like DeMeco who is open with his faith.”
As the Texans prepare for the postseason — with 14 teams now vying for a shot at Super Bowl LX on February 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California — the franchise continues to chase a milestone it has never reached: a Super Bowl appearance.
Yet for Ryans, the ultimate victory goes far beyond wins and losses. His message remains clear and consistent: success on the field is temporary, but faith in Christ is eternal. And as the spotlight grows brighter on Houston, he’s determined that the light reflected points to God alone.
