Christian actor Alister Hawke admits he felt the weight of history, faith, and expectation when he stepped into the role of the Apostle John—often called Jesus’ most beloved disciple—in the latest season of Fox Nation’s docudrama series Jesus Crown of Thorns.
Speaking on Fox & Friends Weekend, Hawke described the role as both an honor and a responsibility, noting that portraying one of Christ’s closest followers demanded a posture of reverence and humility. John, after all, is remembered in Scripture for his unwavering devotion—remaining at the foot of the cross with Mary when many others fled.
“There’s a certain reverence when you play a character like John the Apostle,” Hawke said. “What creates that reverence is their obedience, their faithfulness and their consistency to the task at hand.”
Rather than depicting John as a distant spiritual icon, Hawke said he approached the role as an ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances. In his view, the power of the biblical story lies not in flawless heroes but in faithful individuals navigating fear, doubt, and danger while choosing obedience to Christ.
Hawke acknowledged that his own Christian faith added an extra layer of pressure to the performance—but he described it as a welcome challenge. “I won’t lie if I say it didn’t add another layer of pressure, but in the best way possible,” he said. “You want to do justice to these people and tell their story.”
That desire for authenticity drove Hawke to dig deeply into the historical and cultural context surrounding the disciples. He explained that he is passionate about moving beyond surface-level portrayals of biblical figures and instead exploring the human emotions and real-world risks they faced while following Jesus in a hostile environment.
“I’ve always been really passionate about exploring the context of these stories,” Hawke said. “Making sure things aren’t just taken at base value, so we can really drill into those beautiful moments—but also the contextual side of things.”
Jesus Crown of Thorns, produced for Fox Nation, is a multipart docudrama that expands beyond the Gospel accounts to examine the political and social pressures of first-century Judea. The series highlights the danger surrounding Jesus’ ministry and the courage required of those who followed Him as He challenged religious authority and the Roman status quo.
By blending Scripture with historical insight, the series aims to help viewers better understand the cost of discipleship—particularly for figures like John, whose loyalty to Christ ultimately led to persecution and exile.
For Hawke, the role was not just another acting job, but a reminder of what faithful obedience looks like in uncertain times. In portraying John, he hopes that audiences will see not only a beloved disciple but also a model of devotion, courage, and steadfast love—qualities that remain deeply relevant for Christians today.
