Backed by what Fox News calls the largest documentary deal in history, Amazon and MGM Studios have unveiled “Melania,” director Brett Ratner’s portrait of the first lady, spanning the 20 days leading up to the 2025 inauguration.
Amazon MGM Studios released the trailer for its upcoming documentary on Melania Trump earlier this week. The movie will open in theaters on January 30.
The film offers a bird’s-eye view of Trump’s return to the White House following the 2025 Presidential Inauguration. The preview includes shots of Trump’s son, Barron, making public appearances, as well as her support for her husband, President Donald J. Trump.
In one scene, as he speaks, she chimes in to help him convey his legacy as a “peacemaker… and unifier.” At other times, she meets with dignitaries and policymakers, explaining, “Together with like-minded leaders, we have a voice.”
As Trump returned to the White House, she released her autobiography, “Melania,” which still sits on the New York Times bestseller list a year after its release. Additionally, she founded the new production company, “Muse Productions,” with the new documentary serving as its inaugural release.
In a famous quote frequently attributed to Winston Churchill, the statesman said, “History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it.”
With these combined efforts, it appears that the first lady is determined to add her own voice to the narratives surrounding her life in the public eye.
“Everyone wants to know,” she says. “So here it is.”
During her husband’s first term, the first lady’s quiet support sometimes drew speculation from the media. One subtle public response was a jacket emblazoned with the message, “I Really Don’t Care . . . Do U?” The new book and film seem to be part of a strategy to have a stronger, more direct voice in conversations centered on her.
The preview, using carefully framed shots unfolding like a political exposé, is not unlike her husband’s own flashy opener to his NBC series, “The Apprentice.”
“History is set in motion during the 20 days of my life prior to the U.S. Presidential Inauguration,” the first lady told Fox News. “For the first time, global audiences are invited into theaters to witness this pivotal chapter unfold—a private, unfiltered look as I navigate family, business, and philanthropy on my remarkable journey to becoming First Lady of the United States of America.”
She added, “The 20 days of my life, preceding the U.S. Presidential inauguration, constitute a rare and defining moment—one that warrants meticulous care, integrity, and uncompromising craftsmanship,” she said. “I am proud to share this very specific moment of my life—20 days of intense transition and planning—with moviegoers and fans across the globe.”
Fox News also reported that Disney, Netflix, and Paramount were all interested in the film, but it ultimately landed with Amazon MGM for a price of $40 million, the “largest documentary deal in history.”
The film’s official synopsis follows:
Amazon MGM Studios’ film MELANIA offers unprecedented access to the 20 days leading up to the 2025 Presidential Inauguration — through the eyes of the First Lady herself. Step inside Melania Trump’s world as she orchestrates inauguration plans, navigates the complexities of the White House transition, and moves her family back to the Nation’s Capital. With exclusive footage capturing critical meetings, private conversations, and never-before-seen environments, MELANIA showcases Mrs. Trump’s return to one of the world’s most powerful roles.
Will audiences be drawn to “Melania”? Nothing’s for certain, but if Disney, Netflix, Paramount and MGM were vying for the film, it’s probably a safe bet that the first lady’s voice will find a larger audience.
“Melania,” starring Melania Trump, directed by Brett Ratner, and produced by Ratner, Trump, Fernando Sulchin, and Marc Beckman.
It will be released in theaters on January 30.
