Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte is making waves of a different kind — this time, in the waters of baptism. The 12-time Olympic medalist recently shared that he has rededicated his life to Jesus Christ amid a season of personal transformation that includes sobriety, recovery, and a pending divorce.

“I love sharing my life with my fans and followers. In this season of growing, I have learned that the only thing that truly matters is what God thinks of me,” the 41-year-old athlete wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post. “I made the decision to rededicate my life to Jesus, and today I was baptized!”

The swimmer’s message was accompanied by a touching video of his baptism at Canvas Church in Alachua, Florida, as well as photos with his girlfriend, Molly Gillihan, and their children. “My heart is full of so much love and happiness, and I’m just so thankful for everything God is doing and going to do in my life,” he added. “Thank you for all those who have loved and supported me throughout my life, you mean so much to me!”

Among those cheering him on was Christian singer Cory Asbury, who commented, “Incredible, brother!! God is good!!”

Lochte’s journey to this moment has been a long one. Once celebrated as one of the greatest swimmers in history — second only to Michael Phelps — Lochte’s career and personal life have often been marked by turbulence. He faced multiple suspensions, including a 10-month ban following a misconduct incident at the 2016 Rio Olympics and another in 2018 for a doping violation.

More recently, Lochte has been open about his battle with addiction. In August, he revealed he had reached 54 days of sobriety, saying he had fallen into “a really dark place” after a car accident in 2023 nearly took his life. “I went through depression, loneliness and wanted to give up on life,” he admitted. Reflecting on his survival, he said, “God was watching me, and he was like, ‘It’s not your time.'”

Lochte’s spiritual renewal comes amid a difficult chapter in his personal life. His wife, Kayla Rae Reid, filed for divorce in June after what she described as a period of “deep prayer and reflection.” “I hold marriage in the highest regard, so this has been one of the most painful, revealing and challenging seasons of my life,” she wrote on Instagram. “I believe God is still at work — even in the breaking, even in the unknown.”

Despite the challenges, Lochte’s baptism reflects a turning point — a declaration of hope, healing, and faith in God’s grace. He joins a growing number of athletes and entertainers who have recently shared their own faith journeys publicly.
