Please go see Tyler Perry’s new movie, “Why Did I Get Married Too?” You can see the trailer here.
I so appreciate it when any cultural leader takes the time to make a clear statement of his or her faith in God, and Perry did so wonderfully this week on NBC’s “The Today Show” with Hota Kotb and Kathy Lee Gifford.
In his interview, he was asked what sustains him in the business, whether it be the difficult task of getting his movies made or even in his early days of hardship which included no money, sleeping in his car and then later going somewhat unnoticed even though he was turning out great movies.
“It all goes back to one thing…my faith in God,” said Perry.
There it was! Clear. Simple. Non-preachy. A fine testimonial.
“I get these flashes of light, this calming,” he went on to say, even noting that his mentioning of his faith “gets eliminated from a lot of” interviews and/or stories about him.
Going beyond his faith and the mentioning of many of his blessings, Perry also gave some indications on what we can expect from the movie and why he made the sequel to “Why Did I Get Married?”

“I wanted to revisit” the characters and see “if they had anything more to say,” Perry told Ms.’s Kotb and Gifford.
He also spoke of his own growth and the discovery of the impact of his work upon real people. “A lot of people who aren’t black are relating to it,” he said. “The people that I’m speaking to…they get it. They love it.”
Janet Jackson makes more than a cameo appearance in this one. “Her character really goes through a lot of things, a lot of emotions…when she breaks, she really breaks.”
I’ll be interested to see it. Especially because I’m a fan of this emerging media star who doesn’t hesitate to give testimony of his faith, and who does so in a way that’s winsome, believable and refreshing.
