Lauren Daigle is opening up about the pressure she has faced in the music industry and why she has never been willing to walk away from her Christian faith — even when mainstream success came calling.

During an interview at the 13th Annual K-LOVE Fan Awards, Daigle recalled a memorable conversation with a music executive in New York City who questioned her commitment to Christian music despite her growing crossover success.

“You’re a superstar. Why do you have to be Christian?” the executive reportedly asked her.

Daigle said she immediately understood what the woman was implying.

“It was this moment of me laughing so hard because I knew what she was trying to say,” Daigle explained. “Like, we could really do something with this if you weren’t Christian. And, but I love the fact that I get to share this message.”

The Grammy-winning singer has become one of the most recognizable names in Christian music over the last decade, while also finding major success in the mainstream market. Her 2015 debut album, “How Can It Be,” launched her into the spotlight with hit songs like “Trust in You,” “First,” and “O’Lord.”

Her crossover breakthrough came with her 2018 album “Look Up Child,” which featured the massive hit “You Say.” The song became one of the most successful Christian tracks in recent history and crossed onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album also earned Daigle two Grammy Awards.

Still, Daigle admitted that balancing success in both Christian and mainstream spaces has sometimes created tension.

“I feel like pressure can exist both ways,” she said. “Like, are you staying Christian enough for the Christians? Are you cool enough for mainstream world, you know? All of the pressures can be spinning.”

Despite those expectations, Daigle said authenticity has helped her remain grounded.

“But I think if you stay authentic, those pressures get a lot smaller,” she continued. “They decrease in intensity, and that’s what I actually delight in. And then you get the right people around you. If you get the right people around you, then you’ll steady the course.”

Daigle co-hosted this year’s K-LOVE Fan Awards alongside Sadie Robertson Huff. The event took place at the Grand Ole Opry House on May 24 and aired on May 29 on Trinity Broadcasting Network.

Robertson Huff said the atmosphere at the event feels far different from a traditional Hollywood awards show.

“I remember the first time I was at an award show seeing Lauren worship just in the crowd and being so inspired by that,” she said. “It doesn’t feel like anybody’s striving. It doesn’t even feel like you’re here to perform or just celebrate, be together, worship together.”

She added, “That’s really rare. That’s really weird in an award show, but I really feel that here.”

For Daigle, that spirit of worship and authenticity appears to remain at the center of everything she does — regardless of how large her platform becomes.
