Former child actor Keith Thibodeaux is mourning the death of his longtime friend and fellow The Andy Griffith Show child star Dennis Rush following Rush’s battle with leukemia.

Thibodeaux, who played Johnny Paul Jason on “The Andy Griffith Show” and Little Ricky on I Love Lucy, shared the emotional news in a social media post last week.

“I just got word that my old buddy Dennis Rush, a fine actor and a great friend, passed away,” Thibodeaux wrote alongside a photo featuring several former cast members. “What a shock.”

Rush was best known to fans of the beloved sitcom for playing Howie Pruitt, one of Opie Taylor’s close friends in the fictional town of Mayberry. Thibodeaux reflected warmly on their years together, both on and off screen.

“He was with us as one of Opie’s buddies,” he wrote. “I will miss him at the ANDY GRIFFITH festivals as we had so many stories to tell.”

The loss became even more personal as Thibodeaux revealed he had recently prayed with Rush after learning of his leukemia diagnosis.

“I’m just glad that I was able to pray with him last month at one of the festivals when he found out that he was diagnosed with leukemia,” he shared. “Mayberry has lost a great citizen and a great friend!”

The heartfelt tribute drew responses from many in the entertainment community, including Lucie Arnaz, daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. “Sorry, Keith,” she commented. “Those decades-long friendships are the best. He will save a nice place for you where he’s going, I’m sure.”

The Andy Griffith Museum also honored Rush with a touching statement, describing him as “one of the sweetest men you could ever meet.” The organization praised the kindness and joy he brought to fans during appearances at Mayberry Days festivals over the years.

In a 2022 interview, Rush reflected fondly on his time on the show, saying, “I got to be in eight episodes over about a two-and-a-half-year period. It was just the best of the best.”

For Thibodeaux, the moment also stirred memories of how faith shaped his own journey in Hollywood. Growing up as a child actor on “I Love Lucy,” he once asked his father why God had chosen him for such a unique role.

“My dad said, ‘Well, God’s got a purpose for you, Keith,'” Thibodeaux recalled. “That always stuck in my mind.”

Today, the 75-year-old continues sharing his love for music and his Christian faith, using his platform to encourage others while honoring friendships that have lasted a lifetime.
