A primetime Netflix talent show turned unexpectedly into a moment of worship Tuesday night as “Star Search” contestant Bear Bailey delivered a tear-filled performance of “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” a song made famous by Jelly Roll and worship leader Brandon Lake. What followed stunned viewers as Bailey openly shared his testimony of addiction, brokenness, and redemption through Jesus Christ—prompting Jelly Roll to preach to millions watching around the world.
Bailey, visibly emotional on stage, told the audience, “I’m a very imperfect person loved by a perfect God and Jesus. Jesus has redeemed me. Drug addiction. I’ve lost everything because of addictions, and I’m not perfect, but I serve a God who is, and he believes in redemption.” Netflix viewers soon learned Bailey had chosen the song before knowing Jelly Roll would serve as a judge—a twist that left the country star speechless and overwhelmed as cameras showed him wiping tears from his face.
“Star Search,” rebooted for Netflix and hosted by Anthony Anderson, features Jelly Roll alongside Chrissy Teigen and Sarah Michelle Gellar as judges in a live format where viewer votes influence the results. As Bailey finished speaking, Jelly Roll briefly passed the mic to his fellow judges to compose himself. Teigen praised Bailey’s delivery and authenticity, while Gellar said, “We just found you,” calling the moment star-making television.
When Jelly Roll finally spoke, the emotional weight of the scene shifted again—this time toward Gospel proclamation. “I prayed this morning. I said, God, give me an opportunity to talk about you,” he told Bailey. “Night one was great, but I didn’t get to live on my purpose yet. God, you called me here to talk about you.”
Then, looking out at the cheering audience, Jelly Roll declared, “What I just seen was a room full of people that might not have ever felt it before, but that is called the Holy Spirit of God. He doesn’t care anything about your past. He doesn’t care what you’ve been through. He doesn’t care about your drug addiction. He is your Father.” He continued with a clear Gospel message rarely heard on major secular platforms: “He hung so you can stand here and sing His name on the biggest streaming service in the world. He is a redeemer. He is for everybody. Jesus is for everybody. He doesn’t hate anybody. He loves everybody, and that’s what He stands for.”
Viewers erupted as Gellar and Jelly Roll each awarded Bailey five stars, with Teigen giving four. “And you, my friend, can win this show,” Jelly Roll told him.
“Hard Fought Hallelujah” has already carved out a life beyond the show, winning Song of the Year at the 2025 K-Love Fan Awards and the 2025 GMA Dove Awards, while earning platinum certification and a CMA nod. For Jelly Roll, who has often credited his faith for his own transformation, the moment appeared less like entertainment and more like answered prayer. As he said earlier in the night, “God, you called me here to talk about you.”
