After nearly a year of silence on the scoresheet and a long road back from injury, Gabriel Jesus made sure there was no confusion about who deserved the glory when his breakthrough moment finally arrived.
The Arsenal forward scored a decisive goal in the 78th minute of Tuesday’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa, sealing a dominant 4–0 victory and strengthening Arsenal’s grip at the top of the Premier League standings. But it wasn’t just the goal that captured attention — it was what came next.
Moments after finding the net, Jesus removed his jersey to reveal a message printed on an undershirt: “I belong to Jesus.” The public declaration of faith earned him a yellow card under league rules, but for the Brazilian striker, the message mattered far more than the penalty.

Asked about the shirt after the match, Jesus spoke openly about his Christian faith and how it carried him through one of the most difficult seasons of his career.
“Jesus saved my life from the beginning, when I was born. I didn’t know it yet,” he said. “Through the tough moments in my life, I realized we are nothing without Jesus, so I want to glorify His name. He made a huge difference in these tough moments. So now, in the shining moment, I want to glorify His name.”
The goal marked Jesus’ first in almost exactly a calendar year. In January, he suffered a devastating ACL injury that sidelined him for months and cast uncertainty over his future. The setback forced him to miss Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League squad selection and disrupted his momentum at a crucial stage of the season.
Jesus said the injury reshaped his perspective. “To start the year the way I was playing, confidence was back. And for some reason, the Lord stopped me,” he explained. “Then I could do better as a person, as a human being. I think it’s amazing how Jesus works in our lives.”
He described a season marked by doubt, patience, and spiritual growth—a process he now views as purposeful. “Sometimes, you just keep questioning, doubting yourself, but you never know what’s going to happen, what Jesus has prepared for you,” he said. “So I just say keep going, trust in the process and trust in Jesus.”
Jesus’ visible faith echoed memories of fellow Brazilian star Kaká, who famously wore an “I belong to Jesus” shirt after winning the Ballon d’Or in 2007. Like Kaká, Jesus has never shied away from acknowledging Christ on the world’s biggest stages.
Now fully fit, Jesus is expected to be part of Brazil’s national football team plans for the upcoming World Cup this summer. He appeared in the 2022 tournament but saw his campaign cut short by a knee injury suffered during the group stage.
