New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers may be known for his speed and talent on the football field, but he says his greatest strength comes from something far deeper—his faith in God and his love for Scripture.
In a recent video for GQ, the rookie NFL star shared that his Bible is the one item he can’t live without. “One of the key factors about my life is, I love learning new things about the Bible,” Nabers said. “When Christ was on the earth, what He did, a lot of stuff like that. It also has my name on it. It’s from my mom. She got me this one. So I always keep a Bible with me.”
Nabers explained that his daily life and success are built on prayer and trust in God’s plan. “I always like reading the Bible just because it’s one of the things that I thrive on, is my belief in Christ and having a relationship with God because God is real. He has got me through a lot of different obstacles in my life. And without Him, I wouldn’t be here today, praying when I wake up, praying at night.”
He added that prayer has been a constant source of strength: “I have prayed to God for some things, and He has blessed me with a lot of different accomplishments, a lot of different things in my life. So it’s one of the main things I keep in my life.”
Nabers credits his upbringing for planting those seeds of faith. “I was taught as a little boy that you always keep God first,” he said. Anything that you ask God is not going to always come right then and there, but it’s going to come eventually. Just keep on believing.”
The wide receiver also laughed as he recalled the soundtracks of his youth: “I know a lot of kids are gonna remember when I say this. It’s a Saturday night, and you play the game all night. You wake up in the morning, and you hear your mama got that loud Sunday church music on. And that’s to clean up.”
Nabers, who entered the NFL last year, told WFAN Sports Radio that adjusting to a new quarterback was part of the challenge of stepping up to the professional level. “It’s just about knowing him, because it’s a different arm, different rhythm, different spin on the ball, and I’m a different route runner than he’s had. So it’s really about that key element of trying to get on time, knowing each other, and the relationship has just been absolutely great.”
But no matter the challenges, Nabers said he trusts that God has a plan: “I think I can do anything I put my mind to if I keep faith in God; if that’s not what He wants, it’s not what He wants, but I’m sure there’s a lot of greater things down the road.”
As a young athlete on one of the biggest stages of sports, Nabers is determined to remain grounded in his faith. “I just trust in myself and not try to be somebody I’m not, and be where my feet are—and when I get the ball, do something with it and show my talent off.”
For Nabers, football may be his profession, but his foundation is Christ. His Bible, given to him by his mother, is a daily reminder that his true strength comes not from his own ability but from God.
