After courting controversy for featuring a gay couple on their Magnolia Network’s new show, “Back to the Frontier,” Chip and Joanna Gaines are back in the news for producing another show with LGBTQ+ themes. The couple, which has billed themselves as Christian with a family-friendly TV network, had been criticized earlier this summer after it was discovered “Back to the Frontier” included a gay couple and their adopted son via IVF. Chip Gaines had defended the show, claiming that Christians were being “quick to judge” and that the show had focused on kindness rather than promotion. Now, clips of the show, “Roller Jam,” which debuted on the Magnolia Network last year are reigniting further controversy.

The show, which was not renewed for a second season, featured an American Idol– style competition with roller skating and an all-queer team, with some of the male contestants wearing dresses during the competition. It also featured openly gay Jonny Weir as a judge, who often dressed in drag and effeminate clothing. Jordin Sparks, an outspoken activist for LGBTQ+ rights, was featured as the show’s host. The LGBTQ+ media outlet, Out, featured the show last year, calling it, “the LGBTQ+ roller skating reality show we never knew we needed.” “Roller Jam features plenty of LGBTQ+ representation and openly gay Olympic ice skater Johnny Weir is thrilled to showcase so much love and queer energy on the show,” Out noted. Joanna Gaines promoted the show on her socials, calling it a “dream come true” and painting it as a show “the whole family can watch together.”

Conservative commentator Jon Root called out the couple on social media. “Why are you promoting homosexuality as a Christian in your ‘Roller Jam’ show? Why do you support men crossdressing, like the judge on your show? Why compromise on the Bible’s clear teachings on this? Again, disappointed would an understatement…” The Daily Wire’s Megan Basham pushed back at Chip Gaines’s previous claims that critics of “Back to the Frontier” were being too quick to judge. “Another show that @chipgaines and Joanna Gaines are producing. This blows apart Chip’s pretense that they are merely trying to be kind and understanding to individuals who identify as LGBTQ,” she wrote. “They are clearly using their positions and influence to promote disordered sexuality and gender behavior.”
