Filming the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ is no small task, and for the cast and crew of “The Chosen,” it was an emotional and sacred experience unlike anything they’ve done before.
In a recent viral behind-the-scenes video, fans got a glimpse of the cast’s heartfelt reaction while filming this powerful scene from Season 6. The two-minute clip doesn’t even include dialogue or footage of actor Jonathan Roumie as Jesus, but it still hits hard. Actors are shown crying during and after takes, overwhelmed by the weight of the moment they were portraying.
Elizabeth Tabish, who plays Mary Magdalene, was seen weeping both in front of the camera and off to the side, being consoled by director Dallas Jenkins. Lara Silva (Eden) and Amber Shana Williams (Tamar) were also visibly emotional. In the final moments of the video, Jenkins himself, exhausted and tearful, is comforted by his wife.
“It’s not so much a pressure — it is a responsibility. It’s a sacred responsibility. It’s a holy responsibility,” Roumie said about portraying Jesus during the Crucifixion. He described this season as his most physically and emotionally demanding yet.
Season 6 of “The Chosen” is being filmed in Matera, Italy, which stands in for ancient Jerusalem. Director Dallas Jenkins explained that they wanted a location that felt more like the real terrain of the Bible. “We’re capturing the crucifixion on a real horizon, in weather and terrain that feel ancient,” he shared.
The show’s approach to the Crucifixion is a bit different from past films. Jenkins said they’re aiming for a faithful but accessible tone, less intense than “The Passion of the Christ,” but still deeply emotional. And based on the reactions from the cast and crew, they’ve succeeded in capturing something truly moving.
Elizabeth Tabish said she had to take breaks between scenes to process the weight of the grief she was portraying as Mary Magdalene. “It was heavy,” she admitted, like many of her fellow cast members.
Fans online are already bracing themselves. One wrote, “Broo if the actors and the whole team were still sobbing after shooting the scene… how are we going to fare with this?? I’m crying already.” Another added, “Same here. Fighting back the tears myself, and that was only a sneak peek.”
Season 6 is scheduled to wrap up with a theatrical finale in March 2027, before streaming later on Prime Video. And while the Crucifixion is a dark and painful chapter, Jenkins reminds viewers that it’s not the end of the story.
“This is all just an offering to Him,” Roumie said, “and for souls and for reaching people on a level that they haven’t reached.”
As this powerful season unfolds, one thing is clear: “The Chosen” continues to be much more than a TV show. It’s a ministry—and one that’s touching hearts around the world. Let’s keep the cast and crew in prayer as they bring the story of Jesus to life once again.
