In a shock move to the football world, the Seattle Seahawks have reportedly traded quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders. Smith, 34, has been with the Seahawks for six years, starting for three seasons and going to the Pro Bowl twice. Last season, Smith threw for 4,320 yards and 21 touchdowns with 15 interceptions last season, meaning he will more than likely be a starter for the Raiders, who finished 4-13 last season. The team appears to be rebuilding after both its head coach, Antonio Pierce, and general manager Tom Telesco were let go.
Smith appears to be on board with the news, sharing an article about the trade rumor on X. “God is the GREATEST!!” he wrote. “Excited to get to work and WIN. The time is NOW.” The move to the Raiders will reunite Smith with coach Pete Carroll, who coached Smith five of his six seasons with the Seahawks. The Seahawks will reportedly be signing Sam Darnold in Smith’s place. There are reports that Smith was looking for a contract around $40 million and $45 million per year. Yet despite the Seahawks’s attempts to meet his salary request, Smith would request to be traded, which may explain Smith’s enthusiastic reaction to the trade news.
Smith is set to arrive to Vegas on Wednesday, despite not having a contract yet. Smith has $31 million left on his contract, a sum the Raiders will be taking up in exchange for giving up a third round pick. Smith’s experience and accuracy is making most NFL prognosticators hopeful that he could help turn the team around, despite the fact that he will be turning 35. Some experts are questioning the Hawks’ acquiring Darnold, who has a less successful track record than Smith.
Fan reactions were positive but bittersweet to the news. “Hate it for the Seahawks. Happy for Geno and Pete,” wrote one user. “Geno Smith is much better than you think,” wrote NFL staff writer Ted Nguyen. “If the Raiders can get him a line that could protect him and compliment him with an efficient running game for the first time in his career, he could be better than ever in the final chapter of an already incredible story.” One fan wrote a heartfelt message to Smith on Instagram. “To begin with, I want to give credit to you for your faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior!” wrote the user. “It is truly inspiring how you start off each day posting ‘Thank You Lord!’ Furthermore, from coming to the Seahawks and sitting behind Russ as a backup for a couple years, as well as staying loyal to this organization, then to you becoming a star player for us for three-years is something the Seahawks fanbase will remember forever.
