Singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams, daughter of famed filmmaker J.J. Abrams, is speaking out against pornography, calling it “really dangerous.” In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, the 25-year-old artist criticized the pervasive influence of pornography, especially its impact on young people.
Abrams warned that pornography is “not real” and “a performance,” emphasizing the harm it can cause to impressionable minds. She reflected on her own early experiences, recalling how a sexually suggestive article in Cosmopolitan sparked her curiosity and led her to seek answers online—something she now considers “frightening.”
“Young people need to learn about sex from a reputable resource, like Cosmo or a strong mentor, not just scrolling aimlessly online like I did,” she said.
While Abrams’ warning about pornography is valid, it’s important to note that Cosmopolitan itself has often promoted content that is inconsistent with Christian values. The magazine has faced criticism for advocating promiscuity and even satanic abortion rituals, as CBN News reported in 2023. Despite this, Abrams’ remarks highlight an important issue: the damaging effects of explicit material on young minds.
Abrams is not alone in her stance. Fellow pop star Billie Eilish has also condemned pornography, calling it “a disgrace” in a 2021 interview with Howard Stern. Eilish admitted to having been heavily exposed to pornography at a young age, which she believes significantly affected her mental and emotional well-being.
“I think it really destroyed my brain, and I feel incredibly devastated that I was exposed to so much porn,” Eilish said. She went on to explain that watching violent and abusive content shaped her perceptions in harmful ways, eventually making her unable to find attraction in anything that wasn’t extreme.
“I’m so angry at myself for thinking that it was OK,” she said, adding that she is frustrated by society’s acceptance of pornography.
The statistics paint a grim picture. A 2020 study revealed that 92 percent of men and 60 percent of women admitted to consuming pornography within the past month. The widespread availability and consumption of explicit content continue to shape cultural attitudes and personal behaviors in ways that many find troubling.
For Christians, Abrams’ comments serve as a reminder of the importance of promoting biblical values regarding purity, relationships, and human dignity. The Bible teaches that sexual intimacy is a sacred gift designed for marriage (Hebrews 13:4), and Christians are called to guard their hearts and minds against sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18).
