The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were unveiled on Thursday, spotlighting standout films like “Emilia Pérez,” “The Brutalist,” and “Wicked.” “Emilia Pérez” led with 13 nominations, followed by “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” with 10 each.
Before the announcement, Academy leadership acknowledged the ongoing impact of wildfires in Los Angeles. Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott then revealed the contenders for the film industry’s highest honor, setting the stage for an exciting awards season leading up to the March ceremony.
The 2025 Oscars nominations have stirred up quite the conversation, as several acclaimed actors were noticeably absent from the list. Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Denzel Washington, and Pamela Anderson were among those left out despite their praised performances this past year.
Jolie, at 49, had been celebrated for her role in the “Maria Callas” biopic directed by Pablo Larraín. Despite receiving nods from the Golden Globes, Astra Film Awards, and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, her Oscars snub was somewhat expected after missing a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.
Nicole Kidman, 57, also faced disappointment with her role in “Babygirl.” Her portrayal of a CEO entangled in an affair was well-received, earning her a Golden Globe nomination and the International Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. However, she did not make it to the Oscars’ Best Actress list.
Another notable omission was Denzel Washington, a two-time Oscar winner. His supporting role in “Gladiator II” was recognized by both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards but not by the Academy, although the film did receive a nod for Best Costume Design.
Selena Gomez also found herself on the snub list, even though her film “Emilia Pérez” scored an impressive 13 nominations. Although recognized by several other awards, Gomez was not nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
In addition, the Academy snubbed “Dune: Part II” director Denis Villeneuve, Margaret Qualley for “The Substance,” and the animated sequel “Moana 2.”
The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will take place on March 2 and air live on ABC.
