This year’s Ohio State team has had a lot to say about God. Three of the team’s top players, TreVeyon Henderson, Emeka Egbuka, and tight end Gee Scott. Jr joined Sports Spectrum to discuss the team’s season and faith. Henderson spoke of what it’s taken for the team to reach this championship moment as it went up against on Notre Dame. “This group, the ’21 group, has been through a lot. This is a special moment for all of us to be in this position, to be there for each other, to stay committed to each other the way we have. This season hasn’t been perfect,” admitted Henderson. “We aren’t perfect, but we’ve leaned on each other to keep going, to stay focused, and we’re still here fighting to play with each other until there are no other games to be played.”

One of the most disappointing defeats came from the team’s upset against rival Michigan in November, when Ohio State fell short 13-10. The team has been able to move beyond that defeat, with a big win in the Rose Bowl over Texas. But Henderson has emphasized his faith over his football victories. “”When I met Jesus, He filled me with the love that I’d been looking for in football and money and my family and women. He gave me the joy that I searched for. …He rescued me.”

Jack Sawyer, who played a big part in Ohio’s win, gave the credit to God. “It just means everything to me. God’s blessed this team with so much ability, you know. We wouldn’t be here without Him, so we give Him all the credit first and foremost.” Egbuka gave similar praise. “Things may go rocky in our life, but we know that if we’re serving God, ultimately, He’s going to work it out in our favor. And it may not look like what you thought it was going to look like, but He’s going to bless you nonetheless,” he said.

The team has led a revival on campus. Henderson spoke of how God has impacted his life. “Ever since I gave my life to Him, man, He’s changed my life, you know, his blood, you know, the power in His blood that washed away all my sins and all the shame and guilt, you know, that I’ve been feeling over the years,” he said. “And man, He filled me with his perfect love, and He’s just been changing my life, man, turning me away from the sin and, you know, towards His righteousness and, you know, helping me each and every day to take up my cross and submit to Him and submit to His will. So it’s a blessing to just have the Lord in my life. It’s been amazing.”
