Angel Reese is taking a stand for female athletes. The WNBA rookie and former LSU star took to X seemingly out of nowhere when she tweeted, “Protect young women in sports!!!” Reese shared no further context or information, which left the situation up to interpretation. It took just minutes before this tweet went mega-viral, and it’s drawing all kinds of different reactions on social media.

Many people seem to think Reese is speaking out against males competing against females. The topic has never been hotter. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley recently endorsed the idea that anyone who believes they’re a woman can compete against women, and President Joe Biden just expanded Title IX protections to include trans people. Others believe it could relate to the sexualization of female athletes. The latter is something Reese, who has posed for SI Swimsuit, spoke out about after LSU got bounced from the NCAA Tournament.

Reese said after losing to Iowa in the Elite 8, “Death threats, I’ve been sexualized, I’ve been threatened… I’m still a human. All this has happened since I won the national championship, and I said the other day, I haven’t been happy since then.”  However, there’s also no further context or clues to suggest she’s talking about being sexualized. All she did was tweet, “Protect young women in sports.” That left the door wide open for people on X to opine as to what they think she’s talking about.

Hopefully, Reese comes out with a few more details about what might have inspired her now-viral tweet. Either way, the premise of protecting female spaces and young female athletes is a hot topic in America.
