Actor Jesse Metcalfe said he’s developing a “much stronger connection” to his faith as he gets older. He recently argued that belief is a necessary factor missing from most people’s lives today. Metcalfe told CBN’s Faithwire, “I have a much stronger connection to my faith as I’ve gotten older. I don’t know if it’s because, over time, life just humbles us all when we need to look to something bigger than our problems on this earth.”

He continued, “But I believe having a spiritual connection to a higher power is what is missing from most people’s lives.” Metcalfe is starring in a new movie, “On a Wing and a Prayer,” currently streaming on Amazon Prime. The film tells the true story of survival and faith, emphasizing one man’s journey to safely land an airplane and save his family from danger when their pilot dies unexpectedly mid-flight.

Metcalfe said it’s incredible to be part of bringing a genuine story to life, adding there’s more responsibility when playing a real-life person. He said, “Sometimes, life is stranger than fiction. It’s a pretty remarkable story.” Metcalfe thinks some powerful lessons are central to “On a Wing and a Prayer,” calling it a “story about redemption.” He said, “But it’s also about having faith in yourself. Ordinary people can do extraordinary things when you know life is on the line.”

Metcalfe said he loves seeing faith and family-friendly movies thrive and thinks we need this inspirational content now “more than ever.” He’s been open about his faith, which he found years ago while attempting to get sober through Alcoholics Anonymous. He’s also discussed overcoming addiction and said being honest about life struggles is essential.

He said, “Life is so much easier when you are authentically yourself and when you’re honest. We overcomplicate things.” In 2016, Metcalfe said, “Faith is] really important to me. I really discovered a connection with a higher power and with God as I understand him probably five years ago when I got sober through the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.”

The actor said sharing his story could be a source of inspiration for others who also face roadblocks. “I think people need to see people that they look up to or people that they believe are in powerful positions be honest about the challenges they’re going through,” Metcalfe said. “I think that empowers others.”

Faith is a necessity to get through challenging times. When we least expect it, God shows up and gives up everything we need.
