The 94th Academy Awards were presented Sunday and the event did not go without controversy. While the focus should have been on the award winners an unfortunate altercation erupted on stage.

Will Smith won best actor for his portrayal of Richard William, father of legendary tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, in King Richard. Smith won the award not 30 minutes after charging the stage and slapping presenter Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The joke was about Jada’s shaved head, Jada has been open about her struggles with alopecia and not being able to grow hair so the joke was not well received by the Smiths. After Smith returned to his seat he continued to yell at Rock which prompted the broadcast team to mute the program for viewers at home. The win should have been much bigger for Will as it was his first Oscar win 23 years after his first nomination but it was overshadowed by the incident with Rock.

The Academy Awards released a statement shortly after the incident occurred.

But, as the Hollywood saying goes the show must go on, and it did thankfully without any more outbursts.

The event was hosted by Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall. It makes the first time the award show has had multiple hosts since 2011. It was a historic night for the Coda team as the film took home all three awards it was nominated for including best picture. Troy Kotsure won best supporting actor for his role in the film. Kotsure is the first Deaf male actor to win an Oscar.

This was the first ‘normal’ Academy Awards show post-pandemic with only a few protocols remaining in place. Presenters only had to be tested but were not required to show proof of vaccination. Attending guests were required to show either proof of vaccination or a medical exemption form.
