The Super Bowl is one of the most anticipated American sporting events. The Los Angeles Rams will face off with the Cincinnati Bengals in this year’s showdown. Amongst all the excited chatter about the upcoming game, declarations of many Christian NFL players’ faith and prayer have come to the forefront of conversations.

Jason Romano, “Sports Spectrum’s” media director, is known for his coverage of football and faith. He is among the many sports podcast hosts in Los Angeles preparing for the annual event. This week, Romano shared some of the most memorable Super Bowl faith testimonies in an interview with “Faithwire.”

“Some of these players [and coaches] already had strong faith. If you go to their social media, you see them posting about it,” “Sports Spectrum’s” media director explained. “But there are some that you don’t realize until you ask a question to them, and one of them is the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, Zac Taylor.”

Coach Taylor had declared his Christian faith before on “Sports Spectrum” and expressed how much God has impacted his life.

“He talked about, in priority order, of faith, family, football and that he was a believer,” Romano confirmed about the successful coach. “And I was like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know that story,’ so that was good to discover.”

Romano highlighted his favorite faith story of Cooper Kupp, the Los Angeles Rams wide receiver, who set records in his games and had an overall successful season. Even with the notoriety and money from football, Kupp’s priority in life is his relationship with Jesus. When Romano once asked the wide receiver about what he felt God was trying to do in this season of his life, Kupp responded that he is seeking God first.

“I got to talk to him this week and ask him a question about what God was showing him and teaching him this season,” Romano recalled the initial interview. “His answer was, ‘Well, I needed to be rooted in my purpose, and my purpose is Christ.'”

Kupp also stated that he would still believe that this was his “best year ever” even if his team never won a game. His joy and purpose are in the Lord. He also values his relationships with his teammates more than winning.

“That, to me, was just refreshing, because from the outside looking in, sure, you hope that he’s walking the walk and talking the talk,” Romano spoke kindly of the football star. “But then you get to talk to him directly, and he just lit up when I asked him a question about his faith, and that’s really neat to see. I love when guys do that because they don’t get asked those questions too often.”

Additionally, Romano shared his interactions and relationships with team chaplains.

“[We] have great relationships with the team chaplains of all of the teams in pro sports,” the podcast host said. “So, we talked to the team chaplains. Vinny Rey, who’s a former Bengals linebacker, is the team chaplain for the Cincinnati Bengals.”

Vinny Rey and Kevin Nickerson, the Rams team chaplain, shared their faith testimonies on “Sports Spectrum.”

The stories being shared are ongoing due to so many Christian football players and coaches having life-changing personal faith journeys.

“That’s one of the beauties about being here and covering the Super Bowl…when I ask questions to people who I think might be people of faith,” Romano marveled at the thought. “Most of them light up because it really is the central most important thing in their life. You see that there’s something bigger going on with a lot of these athletes, and it’s not always about what they accomplish or achieve on the field.”
