Hidden Figures is the first live-action, non-franchise film starring more than one female lead to hit No. 1 two weekends in a row since 2011, when The Help took that honor.

Both movies, curiously enough, star Octavla Spencer. The Help found her sharing the screen with Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard. Hidden Figures gives her Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Monáe.

The Help was a top moneymaker four weeks in a row, topping out at $170 million in domestic grosses. It went on to earn a Best Picture nomination, something Hidden Figures is suspected to secure when the Oscar shortlist is announced on January 24th. Octavia Spencer scored the Best Supporting Actress trophy for The Help, and based on the current Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe precursors, she could earn another nomination in the same category this year.

The movie earned the prize, surpassing box-office forecasts and knocking Rogue One: A Star Wars Story from the top spot.

In 2016, it is estimated by a San Diego State University study that only 22 percent of 2015’s big-screen protagonists were female. It’s an honor for the cast of Hidden Figures to work towards busting that statistic.
