Continuing in our quest to define Christian music – Is it Christian because of the lyrics? The record label? The band’s personal beliefs? Is there even a way to define Christian music? – Gotee artist Ayiesha Woods joins previous artists Israel Houghton and B Reith with her thoughts on the question, What Is Christian Music?

What is Christian Music?
by Ayiesha Woods

ayieshawoods2.jpgTo begin with, a Christian is someone who is like Christ. Someone who represents Him, if it were – in every aspect of life. And so to answer the question “what is Christian Music?” I’d have to say that it is music that is about Christ. Music that represents him. In the same way that “Gospel” is theoretically the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Stylistically and categorically, there are obvious differences, but essentially, Christian Music (and Gospel Music) is any music that points people to the person of Christ Jesus.

The definition of “Christian Music” has definitely changed over the last 10yrs or so. To be very honest, (and I’m guilty of this myself) I believe that Christian music has in many ways become predictable and mundane. We’re in a time in our history when our society is fixated on superficial, shallow content, where they are constantly searching for the latest, newest thing; Specifically speaking of music, of course. Both sacred and secular.
I feel as though we, in Christian music have looked to the world to emulate their sound, forgetting that we serve an original God. The original creator. In my humble opinion, I believe that we need to get back to having confidence in knowing that We have the answer that the world needs, that being found in Christ Jesus.
Christian Music should be defined by profound originality, unadulterated truth and cultural relevance, (regardless of particular style). Pretty much like Jesus…who we claim to represent, as artists.
