The sports world has lost a legend, but heaven has gained a faithful servant. Virginia McCaskey, the longtime owner of the Chicago Bears and one of the most respected figures in the NFL, has passed away at the age of 102.

McCaskey, who took over the Bears’ ownership in 1983 following the death of her father, George Halas, lived a life dedicated to faith, family, and football. Her unwavering commitment to these three pillars guided her leadership of the Bears for over four decades.

Virginia McCaskey wasn’t just a pioneer in the sports world—she was also a woman of deep faith. Throughout her life, she emphasized that faith was her foundation, shaping the way she led the Bears and interacted with those around her. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell captured her essence beautifully, saying, “Faith, family, and football – in that order – were her north stars, and she lived by the simple adage to always ‘do the right thing.'”

Her steadfast trust in God was evident in the way she carried herself—with grace, humility, and a heart for service. Those who knew her spoke of her kindness, integrity, and unwavering belief that God’s plan was at work in all things.

As the daughter of George Halas, the legendary founder of the Bears and the NFL, Virginia grew up surrounded by football. She inherited her father’s passion for the game, but she also inherited his values—hard work, dedication, and a commitment to doing what was right.

During her tenure as owner, she witnessed some of the most memorable moments in Bears history, including the team’s iconic victory in Super Bowl XX. She led the franchise with quiet strength, making decisions not just as an owner but as a steward of her father’s legacy.

Her family, which included her late husband Ed McCaskey and their 11 children, was always her greatest joy. Though she was a key figure in the NFL, she treasured her role as a wife, mother, and grandmother.

The McCaskey family released a statement expressing both their sorrow and their peace, knowing that Virginia has been reunited with her beloved Ed:

“While we are sad, we are comforted knowing Virginia Halas McCaskey lived a long, full, faith-filled life and is now with the love of her life on earth.”

Virginia McCaskey’s life was a testament to faithfulness—faithfulness to God, to family, and to the game she loved. She was the longest-tenured owner in major U.S. sports, but more than that, she was a beacon of integrity in an ever-changing world.

Her passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. As Bears fans and the broader sports community mourn her loss, we take comfort in knowing that she has been welcomed into eternity with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
