Legendary country singer Naomi Judd passed away at 76.

Fans were shocked to hear of Judd’s passing which happened just a day before Judd was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Judd’s sister shared that the singer lost her battle with mental illness and took her own life in a tragic suicide.

Daughters Ashley and Wynonna issued a statement.

“Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness. We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory.”

Naomi struggled with mental health issues and just recently opened up to the public a few years ago in her memoir in 2016. The singer revealed she had a horrible experience during a tour after suppressing memories of sexual abuse stemming from her childhood. On top of mental health matters, Judd also had muscle atrophy, and because she suffered from a lack of movement, she developed depression.

Judd was diagnosed with Hepatitis back in 1989 after showing signs of headaches, nausea and aches. It was later revealed it was Hepatitis C, and Judd was told she had just three years left to live. The Grammy winner was at the height of her career and fought to survive despite what doctors initially said.

Judd said in an interview her fear back then wasn’t over her life-ending but her career-ending. Naomi was eventually forced to put things on hold and disbanded The Judds in 1991, but that didn’t stop Naomi from fighting. She faced her odds with a positive attitude and an unrelenting will to survive.

Naomi was born in Kentucky in 1946. She had a brother, Brian, who died at just 17 from leukemia. Naomi raised daughters Wynonna and Ashley as a single mother in Califonia. She and Wynonna later launched one of country music’s most iconic singing duos, The Judds, in 1983. The pair successfully topped the charts with over 20 top ten hits, five Grammys and many other awards and accolades.

The pair were supposed to announce a “Final Tour” at the Hall of Fame induction, but ultimately that time would be used as a tribute instead to Naomi. The mother-daughter duo had just performed together for the first time in many years at the Country Music Awards. Wynonna has promised fans that she will continue singing even through the heartbreak.

Naomi Judd leaves behind a legendary legacy.
