In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of the canonization of America’s first native-born saint Ignatius Press is releasing the second edition of SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON: A SPIRITUAL PORTRAIT. This updated biography, edited and introduced by Seton scholar Sr. Betty Ann McNeil draws from rare archival materials to trace the spiritual journey of the 19th-century convert, wife, mother, educator, and founder of the Sisters of Charity. Seton’s personal writings offer readers an intimate window into her conversion, deepening faith and quiet heroism.
The book remains the only in-depth account of her interior life based on original documents and highlights her enduring impact on the growth of Catholicism in the United States. Organized both thematically and chronologically, the narrative is accessible to readers of all backgrounds and includes moving excerpts from her own pen.
Speaking about the book, Baltimore’s Archbishop William Lori says “I welcome the reissuing of [this work]. [It] sheds an accurate and beautiful light on Mother Seton’s remarkable journey of faith and her search for the fullness of truth. … I hope that this spiritual portrait of Mother Seton will attract a new generation of readers.”
