How do you get along with milk? If you have it in your morning cereal or in coffee, you may already be habituated to some effects it may have on you, some that you may not be so aware of.

Some people are allergic to milk, or to the hormones or additives that milk contains. If you regularly experience gas pains, bloating, diarrhea, or nausea – those symptoms may indicate that you are lactose intolerant.

if you have recurring respiratory problems such as congestion, runny or stuffy nose, or sneezing – milk may be a suspect.

If you determine that you are lactose intolerant, you may want to consider taking a lactose supplement, available in pharmacies without a prescription. That can help your body deal with the lactose found in milk. The are also milk varieties that are lactose-free.

You might consider using a substitute for milk, such as soy milk, or almond milk. Interestingly enough, people who have cow’s milk allergies can often tolerate goat’s milk without problems.

There is a possibility, too, that non-organic milk may contain added ingredients that are causing you problems, such as antibiotics, hormones, pesticide residues, preservatives, and even too many vitamins. However, a lot of the organic milk sold in the US isn’t very fresh, having been shipped long distances because it has been highly processed with ultra-high temperatures for long shelf life. It is very expensive, too.

Finally, it’s important if you’re an adult that you minimize milk consumtion, as there are studies that link milk to possible increased risk of certain cancers, such as prostrate, ovarian and serious digestive system problems as well. There is also a concern about saturated fat consumption (fats from animals) like that from milk, might contribute to heart attacks and strokes.

So think about milk: how it truly makes you feel, and its possible side effects. As always, consult with your doctor, allergist or registered dietician if you suspect a problem.
